Welcome to ObesityHelp. Thanks for posting in this thread so members can get to know you and we can answer your questions.
1. Protein shakes are really a matter of taste. What one person likes another person cannot stomach them. Plus, after surgery your tastes may change. Keep sampling various protein drinks until you find one that works for you. There are lots of them out there.
2. Join the club - I think most of us tried every diet out there only to temporarily lose weight and then gain it back plus more. Having surgery is different. You must change your eating habits and food choices, and incorporate activity into your life. You're doing this for your health and to live a fuller life too. All of the concerns you express are completely normal. The one big thing you have going for you is a long time friend that had RNY and been very successful (150 pounds!!). She will be a big support for you. In addition, you're here on OH with people that understand and will support you.
You're in the right place and we're happy you're here.
New to OH Community. I need the surgery but my small business insurance will not pay. The surgery in my area cost roughly 27k. Any advice from the community would be helpful. Also, I have started changing my mindset on eating correct and trying to do this on my own. I have about 150-165 pounds to loose. Looking forward to comments from everyone.

We're glad you're here so we can support you whether you have weight loss surgery or doing it on your own.
Studies have shown that people lose more weight when they track their food and exercise. The Health Tracker might be helpful to you. You can use it by going to "My OH" on the drop down menu to "Health Tracker".
All the best of luck to you!
Hi, I am new here. My name is Andrew. I weighed in 2 months ago at 360 pounds. So far I have lost 15 pounds. Everyday is a struggle. I am so hungry all the time. I am drinking the Atkins Shakes, and eating Lean Cuisines frozen diet meals. Of course I am adding in fresh fruits and veggies. Now, I am diabetic. I have to watch my sugar levels. I am hoping and praying to have the full bypass surgery. I am been thru so many tests, my head is just spinning. It is just exhausting going thru it all.
I am going to have the surgery at Univ. of MD St. Joseph Medical Center, Towson, Maryland and Dr. Von Reuden is my surgeon (he left St. Agnes). The issue I have now is with the dietician. He is telling me to drink sugar free drinks (but have 5 sugars and the sugar alcohols are sky high i.e. Carnation Instant Breakfast Sugar Free). Then he pushed items that are super high in sugars that I never would dream of eating (Pure Protein Bars, Kashi products, etc.). The worst of all is that he lied to my face. He told me that everyone loves the taste of Isopure Water. I have tried severbottles in different flavors. Each one was gross, and ended up in the trash. And at $5 a bottle from The Vitamin Shoppe, I found it to be a waste on so many levels. Now after loosing the 15 pounds, I would have thought he would be like my cheerleader saying attaboy, great job. No. Nothing. Everything he has recommended is high in sugars, and each visit I tell him I am diabetic. It goes over his head. Any ideas on how to handle this situation? I am stuck, and need some help.
Thanks. This is a great website. I will be back often.
Andrew
We're glad you're a member of the OH community. There are lots of message boards (including boards for each of the WLS procedures) where you can post and obtain support from other members.
Call Dr. Von Reuden or his nurse and let them know you are concerned about some of the food choices you've been told to eat as they are higher in sugar than you think you should eat. When you talk to them, tell them you're hungry all the time so they know that as well. From the food items you've posted, they aren't high in protein. Lean protein will help with you being hungry all the time. Give them a call because they are there to support you as their patient.
