Tijuana Mexico safety
Were it *I*, I wouldn't go anywhere alone, domestically or out of the country. You are going to be in some very vulnerable states and may not be able to act as advocate for your own best care. If anything should happen - whether regarding or surgery or just even during travel, it might be a good idea to have someone beside you to advocate for you.
I will be in Tijuana tomorrow! Surgery is Thursday with dr. Corvala. Look up hospital angeles. I know someone personally who went there and had nothing but raving reviews. Dr. Corvala is highly regarded. I feel very confident in going. My coordinator so far has been awesome. I can let you know more info over the next few days but my husband and I feel safe. We will have a medical shuttle there and back and it's only 5 miles from the border. It's actually in a suburb of Tijuana, not the city. It looks amazing! I'm getting really excited! :)
I had my VSG surgery in TJ about a month ago. I didn't leave the hotel at all, but many of the other people who had surgery the same day I did went out and explored. My husband wandered around a bit, too. He went to some different restaurants and shops.
We never felt unsafe, and neither did anyone else I spoke to. At the time, there were no travel restrictions for TJ. Stay in the touristy areas, make sure you're back at your hotel by nightfall, be aware of your surroundings, and you'll be fine.
As far as travel afterwards, it took about an hour to get back across the border and to our car, and then my husband drove us the six hours home. I felt fine! I also flew to FL and then drove up the coast to DC two weeks later (with my kid, no hubby to help!). I was tired, but I felt fine. Your miles may vary, of course, and it may be different with a different surgery! I'd look into having a wheelchair at the airport, for sure. There were people who went alone, but I'd rather have someone with me if possible.
I loved my surgeon and all his staff. The whole experience was positive. I'd definitely do it again. I wish I'd have done it sooner!
Good luck with everything!
