Uploading a photo...

Hello all!! I can't believe that my first post has to be a cry for technical assistance! I am trying to upload a picture for my profile/avatar. I have a couple photos on my iphone, I have emailed them to myself (selected the smallest size available) and saved to my computer to upload. I keep getting a message that the file size is too large. Any tips on how I can get around this? Thanks!!
