Commitment Contracts
Hate the idea. Totally. I believe in positive thinking and positive outcomes. I see it might work for others but not me. I thrive on praise! To each his own I believe.
Yes, positive outcomes and positive thinking are awesome, BUT "years of economic and behavioral research show that people who put stakes - either their money or their reputation - on the table are far more likely to actually achieve a goal they set for themselves."
Yay for science!

We would expect the Stickk approach to work better than a positive approach, in general. One reason this works, according to research I've read, is that most people perceive the pain of a "loss" about 4x more than an equivalent "gain." I believe the creators of Stickk are professors in behavioral economics, who built the site around this idea.
The fact that the money is going to a group you abhor is extra motivation.

Sorry, but your post title made it sound like you were having someone committed!

Didn't weigh****chers do something like this for a while were u had to pay if u gained weight at weigh in.
Sounds like a good idea but rather than a charity I hate I might put it in a jar to give to someone I hate. If I had to hand a jar of money to my brother in law I am pretty sure I would stick to that goal and not have to put a penny innthat jar
