Should external staples hurt??

I had a femoral hernia repair and the DS done on 2/25. Thankfully I'm home now and managing my pain better.   I've got my staples in til 3/4 and they're pretty painful. Is it normal for the staples to hurt?  I assume it is but wanted to be sure.

They do create some tension which may be uncomfortable when you move around.  I had external staples for my knee replacement and was very happy to get them out.  Not that they caused severe pain, yet they did cause some discomfort.  It also felt strange while they were taking them out, just like removing any medical device.  You may not feel anything, but I did want to let you know that you may experience a weird sensation upon removal.

Thank you. This is pretty bad. I called the on call dr. He said they were supposed to remove any bandages before I left the hospital. They didn't. I thought maybe they bandages were pulling on the staple. After removing the bandages, I'm still hurting too much to sleep. Now I'm debating whether or not to go to a minute clinic

Do they look infected?  Redness,  warmth,  odor,  drainage,  swelling? Might be worth the peace of mind to see a medical professional.

I went to the ER where I had my surgery. They think it's contact dermatitis. They prescribed me a steroid cream to use 3 times a day. He also prescribed an antibiotic cream just to cover all our bases. It still hurts a lot but I'm hoping this does the trick. The ER Dr felt my incisions looked fine.

Oh good!  I hope they start to feel better soon!

Contact dermatitis would explain a lot. I hope that's all it is.  I had a wound infection when I had my gallbladder out; no fun at all.  Keep an eye on your staples.  The advice you got about redness and warmth are clues to an infection, another possibility that I didn't think of.

Anytime I had abdominal surgery that was closed with staples, they always hurt.  It just seems as if the staples pinch the skin, and once they're gone the pain is gone.

Thanks to everyone for the replies!  I went ahead and had the surgeon take the staples out today and swap them for Steristrips. The area started to calm down immediately. The Dr. thinks I was allergic to the staples themselves.
