Should external staples hurt??

They do create some tension which may be uncomfortable when you move around. I had external staples for my knee replacement and was very happy to get them out. Not that they caused severe pain, yet they did cause some discomfort. It also felt strange while they were taking them out, just like removing any medical device. You may not feel anything, but I did want to let you know that you may experience a weird sensation upon removal.

Thank you. This is pretty bad. I called the on call dr. He said they were supposed to remove any bandages before I left the hospital. They didn't. I thought maybe they bandages were pulling on the staple. After removing the bandages, I'm still hurting too much to sleep. Now I'm debating whether or not to go to a minute clinic

Contact dermatitis would explain a lot. I hope that's all it is. I had a wound infection when I had my gallbladder out; no fun at all. Keep an eye on your staples. The advice you got about redness and warmth are clues to an infection, another possibility that I didn't think of.
