I was watching the learning channel the other day and a woman who wrote a diet book called "The Virgin Diet" program was saying that Xylitol Sweetner helps to lose weight, a metabolism booster. I want to try this sweetner but don't want to spend $6.00 for the whole box in case i don't like the taste.. Has anyone tried this sweetner? if so how was it?. Was shopping at the health food store yesterday and saw so many artifical sweetners.

Stevia, Vanilla Stevia, Pure Stevia, Sweet Leaf Drops, NU Stevia, Coconut Crystals Sweetner, Erythritol Sweetner, Beet Sugar, Coconut Sugar, Date Sugar, Sugar in the Raw, Organic Palm Sugar.. Wish the Health Food Store would offer samples of these Sweetners..Hope this dosent start another war/ and haters  on my question about artifical sweetners. thanks for any input..PeaceV Wendy

Why don't you contact the manufacture and see if they will send you a sample and or coupon for a free bottle.  They are pretty good about this as if you try it and you like it then you will be a life time customer    If you try it, let us know what you think.

Xylitol is a semi natural sugar alcohol. It gives me horrible gas.. I would not use that. I use natural organic liquid stevia.

Hala do you know if natural organic stevia is any different taste wise compared to stevia blend or other stevia products. I've tried the stevia blend and cannot get past the bitter taste.

I am not sure. I have been using stevia for years and years.  Some people like it - others hate the aftertaste. One that I use - it used to be called "no bitter" . it is NOW brand "Better stevia" and I use organic. I buy mine on line.

I think some people can taste the bitter - others - not.  I use i in coffee, cookies, baking...

I have not tried xylitol (except in sugarless gum) myself but I have started seeing packages of it all over the place.  I posted here mainly make sure everyone knows that xylitol is extremely toxic to cats and dogs.  A small amount can cause profound hypoglycemia, seizures, and death.  It can also cause liver failure in dogs and cats.

In people, the reason you can get diarrhea from xylitol is because your system initially is not able to process large amounts which leads to the sweetener ending up in your colon....which equals more water retained in your colon.  Apparently, your system can get used to xylitol over time and you can develop a tolerance for it.

I tried using it a few years ago, but it made my stomach cramp so bad that I threw it in the trash and never used it again.

Xylitol and Malitol both taste wonderful, however many experience horrible gas and diarrhea as a result.  Tolerance levels vary.

Hi there, Valerie,

Well stated and quite appropriate in my simple view.

PS. Might your chef hubby know where in CA or elsewhere I could get fresh sweetbreads? I prefer immature lamb thymus.

Thanks for all the replies.  I plan to do the 21 day Virgin diet after the first of the year, and now I know that I do not want to use the Xylitol sweetener.  I do not need the same problems as maltitol which has caused me some of the worst gas and misery of my life.

I will use the Better Stevia instead, (Thank H.A.L.A)
