One of my biggest fears....

I can not tolerate sugar substitutes.  They literally make me cringe and give me headaches. I assume this will be a major problem..am I right?

I read about SF this and SF that.  Are their alternatives that are acceptable?

There are unflavored protein powders you can use that have no sugar substitutes.  Also, unjury makes a chicken soup flavor protein powder that has no sweeteners.

Just give up on sweet things?  Some people tolerate sugar more than others, while some not at all.  If you can, then you really have to be strong enough to pu**** away.  It's one of those things where you just don't know for sure until you're living it.

Have you ever tried stevia? It is a natural sugar and it is sold everywhere, I have replaced all of my sugar with it.

I agree - try stevia - BUT - I am one of those who don't tolerate stevia very well - I tried it a couple of years ago as a substitute for Sweet-N-Low, etc....  Oh my... it did me like excess sugar alcohols do (Maltitol, Mannitol being the worst offenders for me).

But I know quite a few folks who have had great success with stevia, so you might try it.

I'm with those suggesting stevia.  It's a natural sweetener, not artificial like the other zero calorie sweeteners our there. It took me a while to get used to, but I like it.  I don't like things super sweet, either, so I use it sparingly. Like 1/4 tsp in a cup of tea once or twice a day and 1/4 tsp in my Cream of Wheat when I eat it (not daily). BTW - herbal tea has been my savior in helping me get some of my fluids in more easily.

Good luck with your upcoming surgery.

I personally would rather figure real sugar into my daily goals vs using sugar free anything that has a substitute. Too many studies show many adverse affects from sugar substitutes that I have decided I'm not willing to put those in my body. It's real or go home food choices for me personally. I did have sf jello during the pre op and clear liquid stage but it was only a couple a week total.

Truvia (stevia) is 100% real natural sugar. It is not artificial like the others. It has been used in South America for centuries. It's made from the leaves of a plant that is in the same family as a sunflower.

My husband actually works at a sugar factory, and I can tell you that the process involved in making sugar is a very complex process.

I agree with you about the other sweeteners out there, though. They are made out of things like petroleum and other crazy things. I would not be using any sweetener if it wasn't for stevia.  Even splenda, which is made from real sugar doesn't appeal to me as it's just sucrose (sugar) that has been processed even more.

Splenda... LOL - Yeah - it starts out as "real sugar", then is chemically altered by adding chlorine molecules to the sugar molecules - resulting in a "sugar' that your body doesn't recognize as a sugar.  More than a few people dump when they have splenda-type sweeteners (non-bariatric patients).

I can tolerate a little splenda - but too much - and add it to the list of sweeteners that mess me up.  Plus - like we need extra chlorine.... not.
