One of my J.P drains is putting out the most disgusting bloody smell in the world. The doctor say i happens sometimes and not to worry. But I smell bad. I smell like farts, like a setic tank...and it is making me very angry and sad. Are there any tricks to fixing this or making it smell not as bad? Has anyone else had this experience??

Empty your drain at least 4 times a day.

Keep the outside of the drain washed off especially after enptying.

Changes your bandages when soiled.

Relax, it wont last forever !

Have you actually seen your doctor?  I'd be concerned about infection if it smells that bad.

JP drain are usually removed within a day or so after surgery.  Why do you have one 18 months after surgery?  Did you have another surgery recently?  Definitely get this looked after.

yes, i did have another surgery...it has not been 18 months of the same jp drains, i had a tummy tuck with a horizontal and lateral incisions. I saw my doctor, he said that this sometimes happens, all the more reason for a j.p drain to drain away the blood. But he did not have any advice about how  contain the smell. Today, I wrapped it in plastic wrap to see if that would help.

I use a poop spray called Eau de Toilet. You put a drop in the toilet before pooping and it gets rid of any odor. There are several brands out there and I have seen it in grocery stores by the air fresheners or by toilet paper.

I bet one drop in your emptied drain will get rid of the smell.

JP drains after plastics can be in for two weeks or more.

I think your best bet would be to keep it extremely clean and get something like a Scentsy plug-in with your favorite scent.  Maybe even get some Ziplock or Glad bags and put them around the drains.

However, do go back to the surgeon who performed your recent surgery.  The drains DON'T usually smell bad, make sure you don't have an infection.

when I had my JP drains , my home health nurse said I could clean them with 1:1 vinegar solution and rinse well, it killed the smell for the most part

I have wondered about that. Both cleaning it out and using a ziplock bag. I'm going to try that out!
