I just had Tummy Tuck surgery and now that I am home I am getting very itchy when I tak my medication The nurse says it isn't an allergic reaction but more of a sensitivity. Has anyone deal with this before? what did yu do to make it better? It's dirving me crazy, LOL. I also welcome any ohter feedback about how to get through this. It has been harder then I thought iit would be.Mutch harder then my bariatric surgery. Any words of advice for me? This is getting really hard

Benadryl for the immediate relief...coming off it helps too.

I just had back surgery on Monday. By Tues, I was coming out of my skin. Had to stop the pain medication and three doses of Benadryl to feel better.

Yes, it is NOT an allergy. It is a sensitivity but most healthcare providers treat it AS an allergy just the same. Call your doctor and tell them you need a different pain med...if they all do this, ask about taking Benadryl at the same time til you can give up the pain med.

Yes, I had a terrible reaction to Dilaudid I.V.  during my Lap Band placement.  I felt like bugs were crawling all over me - they gave me Benadryl.  It was awful!!!  Funny I had forgotten about it again.  With my new surgeon - well my surgeon who has taken care of me since after Band placement in 2005 we dug up the surgical  records and we knew going forward not to use in the Dilaudid.  That is forever on my medical notes along with my latex sensitivity - all my incisions blistered bad from the bandages during my Band placement then too.  So all my notes at every doc says "latex allergy" and that was the best thing to happen for me because I'd always been sensitive but didn't believe it was an allergy because I like don't die from gloves, condoms etc.  I just get sore/ raw and miserable! Life is so much better never having to endure latex.

There are too many pain meds out there to have to endure one that does not suit you. Ask to have something else prescribed for you.

All Best,

Leila

Benadryl is helping  a lot. Of course it in increases my sleepiness but I don't mind. The hospital was slow to get my pain under control after this surgery which is weird because I was treated easily for pain after my Bariatric surgery nd I have a high tolerance for pain. They have me on Oxycodone which is helping so I plan to keep taking the benadryl...i really don't want them to change the medication right now. I appreciate your comments...you have helped me to settle on this as a plan. Of course, If it gets worse then I will call the doctor. Thank-you everyone wink

I have it too! I had it with any pain reliever I've had while in the hospital (morphine and all others). And I noticed I'm extra sensitive post vsg.

I took Benadryl. It helped. I also spaced my doses which helped sometimes. For example, if they say I can take 5-10mg every 4-6 hrs, I'd take 5mg and then 2-3 hrs later another 5mg (if needed). That was easier to handle than all 10mg at once.

Funny story, while I was in the hospital after the surgery, dazed, sleepy and itchy...I had my stepmom and best friend there. I was itching all over and they were coming over to scratch my back. At one point, they were chatting, I was itching and I said, sorry guys, but even my hoo-hoo is itching! (No filter on those drugs lol). Luckily, it was just them

I used to take Vicodin for migraines before they came out with non-narcotics for them, and I swear people thought I was a 'coke-head' because I rubbed my nose so much.  It was very annoying!

I have the same reaction to morphine or morphine-based pain killers. They gave me a morphine-based pain killer after the sleeve surgery, and since it was a based drug, it was only mildly annoying. There should be alternatives. They switched to different drugs for me, especially at night, so I could rest.

But they should be able to give you some alternative. My doctor/hospital terms it an allergy... not a sensitivity.
