It seems like your research would have shown you that dumping does not help with either weight loss or maintenance.

There is no advantage the dumpers with RNY have over non-dumpers with RNY. Dumping can be miserable and dangerous, but has zero benefit.

As I have seen in my researching that what you just said is your opinion. I have seen ppl who say it helps them it might not be physically but mentally so dont try and criticize me saying I have done research I have! Some people just don't get the hints if you want to be rude go outside..

I don't consider anecdotal stuff or mere opinions that corroborate what I want to hear research. Opinion is useless. I read medical studies on all the different weight loss procedures when I did my research. You can access real data at places like PubMed, if you care to.

If you know of an actual study that shows that dumping improves weight loss, or maintenance even one iota, please give a link to the study. I'm unaware that any exists. It would be big news in the weight loss community. Or a study that dumping improves any co-morbs, because some of the physical things that happen aren't with dumping are very bad for humans. It's science, not opinion.

Agree! I don't dump and have had no regain. I know people that dump horribly and have dealt with some significant regain. Many learn to manage how much sugar they can eat and stop just before dumping so essentially taken in more calories than needed to maintain.

KAT-some of MY dumping is mental, but some of it is absolutely physical. There is no way/no way/no way/no way/no way I can eat any type cereal and milk mixture. Just the THOUGHT makes the foamies start, and my left lower side start cramping. I dump more on high fat items than I do sugar stuff-and more on sugar ALCOHOLS, than I do on real sugar-that one took some time to figure out...so I can eat Cool Whip "Light", but end up hugging the bathroom floor on Cool Whip "Sugar Free"..

EVERYONE is so, so, so different. You may find that the ONE food you love the most is the ONE food your body just will NOT tolerate. It's a crapshoot, and a trade off, for health. Also, what I always find weird is that I can eat a dish just fine one day, but the leftovers-from the same container-can make me dump like a 2 week newbie...It's just a new adventure all the time !!

I am a 11 yr post RNY, who has been incredibly blessed, when it comes to having complications. I had a hernia at 10 months, but it pretty much my own fault (way too much lifting/activity early on, etc). My labs have always been good...I AM having to monitor my sugars, to help the reactive hypoglycemia thing, but this has only recently become an issue.

I am SOOOOOO happy to see you doing all this research, and askng these questions!!

For me the dumping was VERY effective in keeping me away from sweets , from buffets ... basically in breaking the back of my lifelong reliance on eating excess calories to soothe myself emotionally ( that resulted in my wearing an extra 90-100 lbs )

I have a love/hate relationship with my RNY because there is still a part of me that would like to feast like a DSer .  That said , i eat PLENTY. I still enjoy ( high end ) buffets  craft tables weddings and other food-centered .events .

I'm quite sure I would  look ridiculous in a skin-tite dress or  miniskirt and six inch platforms eating a watermelon sized 7,000 calorie portion of brisket and pie  lol even if I COULD ... ! and I'm sure I'd feel like dirt on the botttom of a shoe afterwards ... just as I do now when I have to eat fast food or someone's fatty cooking.  I still LIKE having the restriction provided by a pouch which means I have a very limited amount of bites ...it means I have to enjoy the SOCIAL occasion rather than find an excuse to binge .

For me an RNY means eating a NORMAL thin person amount of food and feeling very healthy and energized afterwards .  I have had amazing energy and get up and go every single day in the whole four ( almost  five ) years since my surgery . I can wake up and run five miles .. or go to school and sculpt and draw on my feet for twelve hours, come home and do it again six days a week .

I have never been ill , never really ( thank God )felt the slightest pain or had reason to regret WLS .  I have plenty of room in my pouch for the lightly  cooked high fiber vegetables, raw fruits and  whole grains which make up most of my diet . I've never suffered a vitamin deficiency and still own all my organs including my perfectly healthy gallbladder .

For what its worth , my skin snapped back pretty easily I look way younger than my age and didn't require any  PS to be able to rock shorts or bikinis or bare arms .   .My common sense tells me this MIGHT have something to do with not eating 7,000 or more fatty calories a day lol , after all that massive quantity of food contains massive quantities of antibiotic residues , pesticides and other nasties too . And by the way   you WON'T be able to eat like that with a sleeve .. only with a DS .

I still can wear most of the tiny clothes I purchased the year after my surgery ..and size four shorts regularly fall off.

Good luck making your choice - my advice is make it based on your REAL heartfelt goals and dreams and be very realistic with yourself as to what lifestyle changes you're willing to live with forever .(((())))  Take as long as you need to decide so you will only be cut once .

I am not a vet since I am only 4.5 months out. But I have had zero issues or complications from my RNY.   Can tolerate any food so far that is on the allowable list.  Get all my protein, vitamins and water in every day too.

Hi all- I wanted to comment on some of the previous comments:  Blanche:  I had the same thing happen to me!  I was 4 1/2 years out and one evening suddenly realized that what I thought might be gas in my stomach...was not.  I began to sweat profusely- drenching my clothing- and the pain in my abdomen became unbearable.  Was rushed by ambulance to the nearest hospital.  I was in a small town in ME on vaca (this happened right after we checked into hotel!) and once at the hospital they heard I had had gastric bypass and I think they panicked a little....while I had my RNY laprascopically, they opened me up to find that one of my intestines may have twisted (was back in place with some bruising) and seeing as there was nothing needed to do there- they decided to take out my appendix!  They found no scar tissue and said that all else looked perfectly fine.  I saw my bariatric surgeon once I was back in MA and she explained the same thing to me:  how my abdominal cavity was now more "roomy" as a result of my weight loss giving the snake-like intestines space to float around.

I was bummed to have had to be cut open- but 2 years later I can barely see the scar.  I've been perfectly fine since.

Prior to this occurrence, I had no issues with my RNY and had no other health issues.  The surgery is still one of the best things I have ever done for myself.  Having said that...I am now one of those grads- who at almost 7 yrs out can really understand that this surgery was simply giving me a tool....and the further out I have gotten t- the more I can play with/manipulate it.  I can eat pretty much anything...because I "tested" stuff..like candy and pastries....(why????) and found that I could eat them- so suddenly I found myself slipping back into old destructive behaviors- and guess what?  Weight came on....the bottom line still remains that this is a simple math issue....if u take in more than u put out.....plan on sucking in your stomach to get those once loose pants on!  I had to realize quickly that I am simply now like everyone else:  watching what I eat...trying to stay with healthy choices.  Also- when I was at my heaviest, losing or gaining 10 lbs made no difference..but now it is a whole dress size!

My 21 yr old daughter is in the process of WLS herself and there are now 2 main options for her:  RNY and the sleeve.  Her surgeon is recommending RNY due to her current weight and lifelong history of obesity.  There are pros and cons to each method so I am sure we will weigh out all of them to make the best decision for her.    :)
