RNY on 11/18/13

I want to know how many of OH ppl have had problems/complications with the RNY? I am asking cause every time I mention it to fellow WLS fans there are all for the Sleeve because of the problems with RNY? I have done my research just want to get a few of your personal opinions. I want my surgery to work for the long run and I like the whole dumping idea maybe if I get sick hopefully my brain will talk me into not eating the bad "stuff". So how bad was it? My insurance only covers RNY and Sleeve. Not a fan of lapband either. Just looking for RNY or Sleeve. Thanks

I had rny on 6/8/05.  I never had any issues!  I did have an emergency surgery, but it wasn't "surgery" related.. it was "weight loss" related!  My intestines started moving around in all the "space" and got tangled.  Not fun, but it could happen to anyone who had a significant weight loss with no tightening of the tummy muscles (surgically or through exercise).

I would have the rny again in a heartbeat!  Best decision I EVER made!

Blanche, Did you feel like you had a snake crawling around or knotting espically after you ate.  I get this on my left side next to my belly button.  They did a C-scan but no Hernia.  Sometimes when I lift stuff it does it too or when I move my bowls.

Beginning weight: 284
Surgery weight: 251
Current weight: 149

Forgot to mention...   find a good surgeon... do your research!!!!   I traveled 2 1/2 hrs each way to see my surgeon.. he has a STELLAR reputation...  research, research, research.. not all surgeons are created equal!!!

Diarrhea, constipation, lactose intolerance, dumping, low blood sugar incidents or reactive hypoglycemia, flatulence, vomiting, dumping.  I have learned to control them, but if I were doing it today would probably choose the sleeve.

Check out the Revision board. That's where you'll get your best answers to this question.

Well, only 30% of RNYers dump, so odds are better that you WON'T dump, so just be aware of that.

I had many issues with my RNY.  Many strictures that had to be dialated.  Reactive Hyperglycemia.  Food Intolerances.  By the time I had my revision, I was throwing up almost daily.  That was ME though.  There are many that are successful.

Keeping your pylorus with the Sleeve or DS is a plus.  It helps to regulate how fast food empties into your intestines.  You just really need to research ALL the options and choose what is best for you.

Diarrhea, constipation, lactose intolerance, gluten sensitivity, dumping, low blood sugar incidents or reactive hypoglycemia (RH), flatulence (so bad - even with very good eating), vomiting, dumping.  etc.

I am 5 years out and still learn to control those. Add low iron - even tough I don't have period,, but I needed iron infusions (series) 2 years in  row. I will wait till close to the end of this year - I know i will need another one. I do take iron - but I can't absorb much of it.

I developed severe RH... so bad I needed to stop exercise.  I have now also adrenal insufficiency - may be or not related to my surgery..

I were doing it today would probably choose the sleeve.

Had RNY almost five years ago and have never had the first problem.  I lost all the weight and have kept it off.
