Did you have to do a doctor supervised diet for 6 months before they would approve surgery? I've read conflicting info online. My medicare kicks in July 1st, and I'm going to be making an appointment with a surgeon shortly after that. I just want to know what to expect with the insurance, I know what to expect otherwise.

Not with Medicare Parts A and B.  If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, it would depend on which plan you have.  Well, at least that was the case when I had my surgery four years ago.

Medicare doesn't pre-approve surgery, either.  If you meet their critieria, you just have surgery and they pay their part of it.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

I'm sticking with the original medicare so that's awesome! I just hope my surgeon will work with me on the 20%, I don't have all of it up front.

My was 3 months d/t paperwork. Also, ck your hospita/or with Medicare to see if they have Medicare Excellent Center award(might not be worded correctly), if not approve find another hospital that is approved that was really what held my surgery up. Good luck!!

Thank goodness I checked into that already, the surgeon closest to me works with a hospital that has the center of excellence accreditation. Did your surgeon require the supervised diet or was that medicare?
