I have heard being diabetic can cause heart attacks, never thought it would happen to me as i ate healthy after wls and maintaining my weight loss.. heart attacks happen when arteries get clogged from too much high fat foods,, I stay away from  fatty foods ..  However I am guilty of still eating lots of sugary foods ,  I exercise alot riding horses, volleyball ,riding bikes ,and walks for hours.Ok just finished 6 weeks of physical therapy after my heart attack & stent number 8 placed in my heart artery. Now attending a Heart healthy Lifestyle education class at the same hospital that I had my heart surgery..

Here's  what happens when you eat lots of sugar.High Levels of blood sugar injure the walls of small blood vessels. They thicken and leak..The vessels eventually clog, blocking blood flow to vital organs. this is what happened to me. that almost fatal night of 12/22/12 ..lol, what a date to remember........yes i still remember the date of my first heart attack was 10/3/04... This education class has helped me with my post dramatic stress.. no therapist needed...

What I don't get is why the people at physical therapy bring treats for everyone.. These are all the people who just had heart surgeries ..These treats are all surgery treats..MnM's..was one..homemade treats of all kinds.. .I was never given alot of surgery foods as a child.. started eating it when i was in my early 30's and got out of control.. I am a diabetic, once a diabetic always a diabetic. weight loss or not..

Sorry about your heart attack, hope you are getting better.  I know all too well the diabetes heart attack risk, my mom was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was 7 years old and she had a heart attack 5 years later at the age of 37.  My mom nearly died, it was the scariest experience of my life up to that point.  My mother took her diabetes very serious after that and went on to live until she was 61.

Good luck.

Awe, I am so sorry about your heart attacks.  I always see you posting about your stents and don't understand why they keep placing more instead of finally bypassing?

Sometimes it's just the luck of the draw my bother was an avid runner and bicyclist.  He was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy at age 27.  He literally was not breathing by time he had his first heart transplant at age 39 or 40.  This heart almost immediately started rejecting and 2 years later he had a second heart transplant.  Though it was successful, he got a super bug in the hospital and died a pretty horrible death.  My beautiful brother loved life so much.

All I could say to you is live.  We all should live while we are alive.

We can chose to live very healthy lifestyles and hope that it is enough.  Some people get lung cancer and were never smokers nor exposed to second hand smoke.

Hope you get to feeling better.

All Best!

Wendy,

Thank you for posting this information. It's very helpful to me, as I'm a big sugar eater.  I don't have diabetes yet, but hopefully this additional information will help me understand better just what I am doing to myself.
