I had my gastric bypass roun en Y procedure in 2004. I've had dental problems, bone loss, TMJ has started up, osteopenia, and have spondomyliasis (sp?) in my spine, kind of like the bone is thinning out and looking like a sponge. Calcium absorption is a big deal. Add vitamin D. Vitamin absorption Period is a big issue. If I were to say do the surgery, I'd make double sure anyone considering it knew that vitamin absorption is very important. I think most reliable doctors these days do emphasize it. Back then it wasn't mentioned but it was a new thing back then and they've learned so much since then, from looking at some bariatric doctor websites and the information they provide. Is it worth it to do the surgery? Yes. Getting that weight down is worth it to save your life. There are problems with any surgery, no matter what, scarring, hernias, etc. so don't think its just gastric bypass with complications. It is a major surgery and life altering. Education and diligence to following all regimens is key.

I am almost 5 yrs out and my teeth are terrible. The enamel is eroding at an alarming rate and no amount of brushing or mouth wash can stop it. The weight loss is great but if your mouth is gross that's the first thing people see so what's the point. I wasn't warned of this and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions because the dental bills and costs are to great and I. Ant afford to have them fixed. Thanks Tom!

I am 11 years post from my gastric bypass.

I started having dental problems 5 years out. The problems have increased over the years. I have had several root canals, crowns, fillings and loss of teeth. I began to suspect there may have been relationship to my gastric bypass and my dental problems. I mentioned this to two dentists and it was quickly ignored it. I was happy when I found this website and others similar to it because now I know I am not crazy. I recently increased my calcium and vitamin C intake. I will also begin adding baking soda  to my whitening toothpaste. I am willing to this if it will stop the huge outflow of money due to dental visits.

It could be a nutritional thing, some vitamin that she's low in (calcium maybe?) that is causing her teeth to decay. People who vomit a lot are bringing that acid into their mouth and that can cause teeth to decay, but post surgery when you regurgitate you are just bringing up what you ate, there are no stomach acids in it to cause that for us.

My teeth are not falling out thank god, but I have gone from ZERO cavities to 8 over the last 5 years. For me it is the terrible acid reflux I've had since my DS. My gastro doc increased my Nexium and I don't wake in the middle of the night with acid in my mouth anymore.

hello I am 4 years post op and I am just now experiencing dental problems. I have had to have two teeth extracted since my surgery. I do everything I'm supposed to with my dental and I'm still having issues with my teeth. I think the surgery correlates with dental issues. Also my gums are very sensative. My father has too lost his teeth due to bariatric surgery.
