Any one have Dental problems after gastric bypass....
Lower D labs and not taking enough calcium citrate can be the issue here. Shortages of either of these will give you calcium issues affecting your teeth very easily. I had RNY 6 1/2 years ago. I've had 2 cavaties filled in the past 5 years. I fell and broke a front tooth and went to a dentist to get a new front tooth "cap" in the same day. As part of the process, I had a full set of xrays. I need one root canal, and I have two teeth with minor cavaties. Both of these teeth have large fillings already, so I'll have to get them capped. Otherwise, no chipped teeth, teeth that are "falling apart". BUT, I do take my calcium daily and keep my D3 levels at over 80. Dave

Please tell me you are taking more than b12- much, much more.
Sounds like you don't have the support of your surgeons office now, and may not have had adequate information from them before, so I HIGHLY recommend looking up Vitaladys list for RNY, and getting thorough labs. If they only took a few vials of blood, they weren't comprehensive enough - you want them to draw up to 20, sometimes more.
Hi Alicia. I am 5 years out and from all the vomitting my teeth are rotting from the inside out. It is horrible. My periodontist says they are similar to a bulimic's mouth. It sucks, but my dentist said to up the cleaning to every 3 months instead of 6 just to help and to keep on top of them. I hope this helps and NO you are not the only one.
My teeth got very brittle after a few years...My front teeth broke, and I had them fixed...Then eventually I had to have them all pulled and got dentures...it wasn't fun, but I do love my pretty teeth...Plus I don't have to worry about it anymore...No more shots, no more drilling, no more pain....Sorry to hear you are going through this.
Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only TRUE FRIENDS will leave footprints in your heart...And may that friendship have such a ONENESS that when one weeps the other will taste salt...Friends are like balloons ; once you let them go you can't get them back....So I'm going to tie you to my heart so I never lose you.
What's your vitamin D level? You should have had labs done at about the four year post op mark.
How much calcium do you take daily, and is it calcium citrate (not carbonate or phosphate)? Keep in mind that if your vitamin D level is below 80, you won't absorb calcium well, regardless of what kind or how much you take (according to the Linus Pauling Institute)?
I am four years out and have not had any dental problems since my surgery, not even a cavity. However, I maintain a vitamin D level of around 100 (to do so, I take 50,000 IU D3 three times a week) and I take 1500 mg calcium citrate daily.

Dental problems and osteoporosis/bone density issues are all too frequent after gastric bypass unfortunately . My belief is that many of us are just not used to the idea of taking vitamins on a twice daily type regimen forever .. since we have been getting what we need for many years through the massive amounts of extra food we used to eat .
Post op its super important to keep up calcium ( citrate ) levels in order to avoid painful cramps as well as dental /bone issues . I personally like to keep citracal chewables around because they are a gummy candy tasting treat i rarely miss . Downing "real "(tasteless ) calcium pills regularly requires a lot more discipline .
You CAN restore Ur teeth's health with vitamin c, calcium citrate , multivitamins and brushing the infection out of Ur gums with baking soda every night .until they no longer bleed .. ((((( ))))) good luck
personally I SHUDDER at the idea of " yanking " teeth .. U desperately need them to CHEW Ur food and to extract the maximum nutritional value out of every bite ... natural teeth look great and youthful ... personally I will spend ANYTHING to keep my mouthful of healthy , natural chicklet -like white teeth .
Which by the way have gotten BETTER since my surgery ....due to my high daily calcium citrate intake and fastidious attention to any slight infection in my gums ( twice daily brushing w whitening toothpaste and infection-reducing baking soda and high intake of vitamin C)
