Drinking w/Meals
I have never followed this rule since day 1 post op. I have no regain. in fact i have lost more weight since my anniversary.. So I am wondering for those of the regainers post op what are you doing to regain? Word is if you drink with meals you will have regain, I drink all the time with my meals I have no regain..Just read the 5 day pouch test , DO NOT DRINK WITH MEALS!! what gives? I am still maintaining, I would be in so much trouble if i did not drink with my meals, I have tried it at times and food kills my little pouch without liquids while eating , not sure what would happen to me if i did not drink while eating.. probably be malnurished to the max....Wendy

The reason drinking with meal often leads to regain is that it washes food out of your pouch so that you can eat more. Perhaps that hasn't happened to you, but it is very common that people that have regained have been drinking with meals.
Essentially, those that regain are taking in more calories than they burn in a day. Drinking with meals makes it easier to take in more calories.

I think it does not matter drinking water or soft drinks along with diet. I prefer water than other drinks with my meals. I agree with you that drinks must be taken in less quantity rather than food including carbs, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals etc. I do know some people who used to drink water or soft drinks even after half an hour taking their meals as they assume their belly would not upset.
I don't count calories, I count fat grams per day , I eat alot of fiber, i work with the F Factor diet plan. I make many of the f factor recipes.they are delicious..I do eat many different foods. Not all are dry. I drink with my meals because i have central sleep apnea and have trouble swallowing foods 'any foods' yes even have trouble swallowing yogurt.if you google central sleep apnea one of the symptoms is trouble swallowing.. i'm sure i'm eating between 1,800 to 2,000 calories a day, i am very active daily.I may burn at least 400 calories a day. Still riding horses. Gotta love lopeing..I do follow many other rules that i believe have kept me maintaining, such as no eating after 8pm. I eat plenty of fiber. One day i will post in my profile all the things i do to keep me maintaining. It's just the topic of no drinking while eating that has me bothered , you can still maintain even with drinking while eating. if i can do it so can others..I am doing something right. I just don't ever want to go back to those dreadful days of all my heart surgeries.. I still regret having wls but i am proud of myself for maintaining ..Peace\/ Wendy

If I can do it so can others......
this seems so judgmental. It's not necessarily that easy for everyone. I too am maintaining with little to no problem and I don't drink with my meals. I would never say if I can do it I don't know why others can't. Always remember where you came from.

Why does it bother you that many people feel they do better by not drinking with meals? If you feel it's best for you to drink with meals, then go ahead and drink. But is it really that hard for you to understand how drinking with meals can wash food out of the pouch so that people get hungry again sooner? You don't have a pyloric valve anymore to keep food in the pouch. There is just a tiny opening at the bottom of the pouch, called that stoma. Is it really hard to understand how liquids could wash food through that opening?
Perhaps I could maintain even if I did drink with meals. But I believe it's easier for me to maintain by keeping my pouch full as long as possible. It would be more difficult for me to maintain if I got hungry very soon after eating. So I'm going to continue not drinking with meals, even if that bothers you.

I really don't get the purpose of this post. You want others to drink with meals because you think they'll be as successful as you? I thought you regretted your surgery?
Anecdotally, a lot of people *****gain ARE people who drink with their meals or soon after. Our RNY anatomy is not conducive with drinking while eating for many reasons.
I'm glad you consider yourself a success and I hope you manage to maintain this positivity because you do seem to struggle with that often.
I can probably answer your question on what would happen to you if you did not drink while eating ... nothing, other than you might get thirsty! I doubt very much that you would be malnourished!!! I am 8 years post RNY, am maintaining a 100% EWL and don't drink with my meals ... and I am nowhere near malnourished or struggling!
At the end of the day it's people's choice how they live their RNY life, but for me it feels much better to encourage people to follow the rules, where they are sensible, than to encourage people to do something that may stymie their success!
