A Question for Pre Ops::Are you Thinking far ahead before Considering WLS?

No "I" really wasn't thinking Far ahead, just what i read here in O H .to a degree..

Was reading our local newspaper  in an article that said as we age we don't think of drinking much..O K i have enough trouble right now drinking lots of water.I am 55 years young. When i am dehydrated , days i dont drink enough i get muscle cramps so bad i can't move my body parts at all. Get them in my lower legs and hands and arms both sides. One example , As you all or most here in O H know i ride horses. One day while riding horse just at the end of the 6 hour ride i was so dehydrated that my left hand cramped up to the point i could not move it at all, had to have help getting off the horse. the minute i got off the horse i knew why i cramped up. I did not drink much that day , it was 97 degrees and had only 16 oz of water with me.. Yesterday i went with my boyfriend to pick up some hay for the horses it was an hour drive to get to the place and 1 hour back. I was gone for 4 hours and had only 16 oz. of water with me.Only time i drink coffee is in the morning ,  2 glasses a day.

Water is so essential, after gastric bypass heck it is before wls too. its 200%  more important after wls  seriously! . this cramping is getting me down so bad is one major reason I am regretting having wls.
I Pee alot because i am a diabetic, Once you are diagnosed as a diabetic before wls you are always diabetic. I am off diabetic meds with my weight loss but still have issues with my sugars dropping to 35 at times.I am good with not eating things with lots of sugars but there are so many hidden sugars in foods I don't always eat perfectly. I do amaze myself everyday with vertually no more than 5 lb regain at times , always manage to take it back off.

You may lose weight with wls but you will still have so many issues with your health after wls that were there pre wls.Trust me on this one. I will most likely blog this info in my profile when i am not so busy.

If you are still going through with wls,  prepare yourself with lots of knowledge what life is really going to be like long term wls wise..god bless all and most of , Love, Peace/, & Joy Wendy

I'm sorry that your journey has been such a difficult experience. It is good to get a reminder of how important it is to consider the benefits/risks of weight loss surgery before making a decision, but I disagree that people who have surgery will always have health problems.

I am physically more healthy than I ever was pre-op. I didn't realize just how bad I felt at 280 lbs until I was at a normal weight.

I definitely agree with you that life is very different post-op. The way I eat, relate to, and think about food is much more mindful. I also feel like I do a lot more planning, but that may be because I'm an adult and pre-op I was just a teenager.

Congratulations on your success in avoiding regain. That is the really difficult part of all of this, and you should be really proud of how well you've done in that aspect. I hope that you are able to find treatment that allows you to have more control over your diabetes so that you can live a more comfortable life. No one eats perfectly, so don't be too hard on yourself.

Very best wishes to you!

well, why don't you pack more than 16 hours for a 6 hour horse ride or 16 ounces for a 4 hour car ride. I take 72 ounces EVERYWHERE I go with me in  a bag with snacks also.
I also carry a gallon jug of spring h20 in my car all the time in case I run out.

There is really no reason for you to continue to do that to yourself. Better planning will solve those problems.  Cramping can also be cause from low magnesium.

I ddon't think thies is necessarily a RNY problem,I think it is a user problem.

yeah - bananas are a great source of nutrition.....not a replacement for fluids.

but, you've posted long enough about your "issues" that you probably missed this one.

WLS is a major surgery that will continue to have implications for life. I had to recognize that what ever I had to do to lose the weight I would have to be prepared to continue for the rest of my life. The handfuls of vitimins are for life, so many things to consider.

I try to stress to newbies that this isn't a quick fix. Don't do it unless you have no other choice. On the other hand I would do it again in a heartbeat. I guess I was at a point where I knew all the other things I had tried and failed at and knew how awful my health was and so decided that what ever it took I was willing to do. Not everyone is at that point.

I don't think you are typical, Wendy, to be honest ...

I am 8 years out and while I have some health problems, they certainly were not caused by RNY, but I believe they would be worse if I were still morbidly obese.

At 50, I look and feel better than I did at 30 (I was not MO at that time) because I take better care of myself and my health than I ever have!   I do feel THAT is a decision one has to make when they have any form of WLS - if they want to be successful and healthy!!!

Thank you Kim.  She is anything  but typical, at least as far as I can tell, Wendy seems to go from crisis to crisis.

Wendy I am sorry you are continually having such a hard time.  But the majority of us post-ops do not have anywhere near the issues you are constantly having.

I have had some blips in the road post-op, as many probably do, but they are not even CLOSE to what I was dealing with when I was SMO.  My surgery gave me my life back.  If I have problems or issues, especially if they can be impacted by my own behavior, I take care of them and move on.  There is no excuse for not getting enough fluids if you are aware of your body being so sensitive.  It certainly is nothing to "warn" pre-ops about.

Being 48 myself, I have to agree with Kim - I feel better now than I did 20 years ago.  And I was not obese at 28 either.  In fact, I was on the slender size, wearing a size 4 to 6.  But I didn't know how to eat for optimal health, and I didn't know what my body needed as far as vitamins, supplements, etc.  While I may never wear that size 6 again, I am much more in tune with my physical self.  And more inclined to take care of myself should a problem arise.

Just hate to see another attempt to discourage pre-ops, especially when the "risk" (of not getting enough fluids) is totally preventable.

It's always a personal, individual decision, but I would have my surgery a million times over if I had to. It has had THAT big of a positive effect on my life, and on my psychological well being as well.

No one can prepare for what its like after because there is no real way to know until you live it.  Every minute of my life MO was painful physically and mentally, my body is riddled with arthritis so it is still painful but I can walk endlessly without having to sit.  I am not embarassed by my size, I am actually excited to try on clothes and see a glimpse of my body in the mirror.  The best things I ever did were wls and plastics to get rid of the hanging skin.  I was watching QVC the other day and they were selling Spanx and I realized what a miracle it is now that I don't have to live in tight binding undergarments, that my stomach is hard and perfectly flat and doesn't sag and it feels amazing, ******g amazing.  I lived in girdle like garments for 20 years because I was so uncomfortable MO, now I am free.  I was diabetic, no more meds, my body reacts to sugar but thats a good thing it keeps me honest.  Life isn't perfect after years of MO but weighing 139lbs at 48 is the best gift I could of ever given myself.

You state: "You may lose weight with wls but you will still have so many issues with your health after wls that were there pre wls."

I totally disagree with you.  You have posted here about your health issues numerous times, and while I have empathy for you, I do so wish you would stop blaming it on your wls!

In this post, you complain about being dehydrated.  Guess what. . .that was all due to you not consuming enough liquids during a 6 hour period outside in the heat!! NOT your wls.

Yes, of course some people have experienced some negative side effects/health issues after wls, but the majority of people have had health issues clear up after wls.

Please remember that many of your "issues" are due to YOU not taking the steps you need to resolve them, not simply your wls.  I base this solely on your past and present post information.
