Hi Everyone!
I just recently got diagnosed with sleep apnea.  Yesterday I received my machine.  I'm running into a problem though my ears kept popping while on the machine.  Now I'm awake not using the machine and they are still popping really badly!  When I had the sleep test with the machine I didn't have this problem.  However I was using a nose mask for the test where now I have the nose pillows (the ones that go up your nostrils)  The nose mask make me clausterfobic which is why the doctor suggested the pillows.   My ears are popping so bad I feel liek I have an ear infection.  (Bad headache with it and i'm dizzy.)  Anyone ever exprenience this in the beginning?

I use the nose mask.  I think I would call the place where you got it and see if they have the pressure set to high for you.  I have never seen these nose pillows, how do you exhale you must have to have your mouth open.  I would guess you would get a very dry mouth.  You may have to get used to wearing the nose mask.

I could exhale but you maybe right the pressue maybe too high.  I called the 800 number on the machine and the lady said the same thing I maybe have to go back to the mask because of my ear sensitivitely.  There's more consitrated pressue with the nose pillows even though at the same setting.  They have to to prevent leaks with the pillows.

I used a nose mask with my CPAP machine for over 15 years.  Pressure may be too high to cause ear issue. BUT, you need to keep your mouth closed, or you'll spend half of your night awake. They make chin straps to help you keep you mouth closed if you haver this issue.  If you had no issue during the test, I'm really wondering why you got a different type of mask?? DAVE

I had a major issue during the test.  I am major claustrophobic and when I had the other mask during the test I ended up with a panic attack..  That's why the doctor suggested the nasal pillows.

There are a variety of CPAP masks out there. I'd have a discussion with your pulmonologist to discuss which one may cal you.  If you have anxiety issues, you may have to take some anxiety meds before bed time.  The machine won't really offer any benefits unless you can keep it on your face.  You might discuss the "mouthpiece" type of mask.  I had no issues with the mask, it was getting the straps adjusted that posed issues.  I do remember when I had a cold several months before my RNY.  With a plugged up nose and a nasal mask, that was real fun trying to sleep.  Open you mouth and air comes out and you wake up.  In the 15+ years I used a CPAP machine, I never had any issues with my ears.  DAVE

I have the pillows as well. I also can't handle the mask. For exhaling on the pillows you exhale thru the nose and there is a release port. I find that I had to switch to the xtra small pillows. I also find that if I pull back on the pillows just enough to not feel plugged up and I can actually feel the air going into the nostral, the air still goes up my nose to do its job but I don't have such a hard time with the pillows. Maybe you could give it a go for a night or two, if it works then you could be right about the pressure being too high.

I felt the small ones had a better seal but the medium were more comfortable.  With the small though the ear poppling was more constant.   My worry with the medium is it maybe leaking.  It's hard to tell.  I think i maybe between sizes.  Small too small medium too big.
