Post-Op CPAP Question
RNY on 03/21/12
I am a little over 5 months post-op and I am currently still using my CPAP but I'm not sure if I even need to be. Does anyone know what the process is for reevaluation? Do I need to have another sleep study or can I just talk with my regular doctor about it? I know for the most part each case is different, I'm just trying to figure out where to start in finding these answers. Thanks in advance to anyone reading.

Heather....my pulmonry doc says that 13 out of 100 of her patients sleep apnea is resolved. she said that if I get up & feel bloated or struggle sleeping, causeseens like too much pressure, then a sleep study would be needed to determine if lower pressure or if no more sleep apnea......hope this helps

When I got my CPAP machine, I was told that a weight change of 30 lbs gain or loss would make it necessary to change the pressure of the cpap machine. I have lost 50lbs now so I am overdue to get my cpap adjusted. Call the supplier of the cpap and see what they say.
I just did an overnight study with a pulse oximeter on my finger to see if my oxygen level drops while I sleep to see if they can lower my pressure or go off it. Haven't gotten the results yet, but I assume it would be to lower the pressure. Would love to go off it, but I know how well I have been sleeping the past 7 months!
Check with your pulmonary dr that issued it.

Me too, I have a machine that has a SIM card and tells the company what settings to adjust me to. 5 being the lowest setting if after my surgery I need to get set to below a 5 I know I will get another sleep study done.
Upon reading here i see there are different types of machines. the machine I use auto programs itself to what I need as I sleep and adjusts accordingly , it also has a sim card that records everything each night, every couple of months I take the card to the doctor , now he has me scheduled to come back in 2 months after my surgery next month to check to see if I need to stay on it. he didtn say anything about another study. but it seems like some people have a different type of machne than I do . ...... I would probably start with my pulminary doctor ?
I had sleep apnea and used a Bi-pap machine for 7-8 years preop. After losing about 50 lbs I stopped wearing my mask (I know, tsk tsk!). I've now lost 127 lbs, had a repeat sleep study a few weeks ago and I am apnea free!!!
