I am pre-op, my referral is in, just waiting for my surgery date. a few months ago i had an angio gram and everything looked great. my cardiologist even said he would give me clearance for surgery. then two weeks ago, i started having heart palpitations. i went to see my primary doc who didnt seem very concerned about it. i stopped all caffeine, including chocolate, but they persist. everyday, all day. i have an appt on tues with my cardiologist, but i was wondering if anyone has experienced these and also do you think surgery will be delayed because of them?

If there is nothing functional, or anatomically wrong with your heart (ie such as labs, ekg, physical exam), could very well be dehydration, or stress. If you also have chest pain, or shortness of breath, don't wait to see the cardiologist to get it checked out. I don't know how a doctor wouldn't be concerned about palpitations until they have investigated the cause, and talked over the meaning of their findings with you....I hope you get answers soon.

This could be due to anxiety.... maybe you are worried about surgery?

Dehydration, or anxiety. Both could cause them. I get them. As long
as you checked with both doctors I wouldn't worry too much.

Get in a ton more water and go for a walk or do something that
can ease your tension. You may not realize that your worried.

Good luck

I had them too. In fact, I went for a stress test before, in addition to the normal cardiac clearance. Everything was normal. They couldn't say what caused them, or why I was having them. They come and go. Post op, they went away for a while, and came back for awhile, and they are gone again.
I wish I knew what causes them, but they didn't stop my surgery.
Good luck!

Thank you everyone! It seems that stress is probably the number one culprit and yes I am worried about surgery - or rather the complications haha.
I did just begin taking xanax for anxiety about a month ago, so I am going to ask my doctor if that could be a cause as well. I just 1) want to make sure my heart is good and 2) want a good outcome for surgery

I'm pre-surgery, too, and was experience frequent palpitations, even after having gotten my cardiac clearance.  After doing some reading (and confirmed by other posters), cause might very well have been stress-related, and/or caffeine consumption and medication.  I was taking an antihistamine daily for allergy-related problems.  Anyhow, I've cut back on caffeine (will need to do that anyway), started seeing a counselor, which has definitely helped with stress issues, and stopped taking the antihisamine, and now, I'm having almost no palpitations.

Just my experience.

I was having these and recently underwent cardiac testing.  My heart is fine, but my blood pressure was elevated (with meds) and apparently that was irritating the heart muscle.  Since I am on new BP meds, my palpitations have stopped completely.

I actually have low blood pressure which is something new as well. my bp has always been normal but lately its been about 109/65, not sure if that is related or not. I have cut out all caffeine, but stress may very well be a factor for me, i'm pretty much on edge all waking hours haha

I had them too and they were checked out.  They were determined to be just "benign palpitations."  I still get them every now and then, especially in stressful situations.  You're wise to have them checked out.
