New- Do you regret gastric bypass surgery?

Oh hell no.

Even with all the health issues I am dealing with now, I in no way regret having the surgery.

My health issues are serious, but my feeling is that had I stayed up there at 344lbs I'd at the very least be dealing with other equally serious issues or be dead from the complications of being SMO.

My surgery gave me my life back. Everything that goes with it is worth it to me because I can actually participate in life again.

Best of luck to you on your journey=)

I'm still only about 3.5 weeks out and the pain of surgery is fresh in my head. My only regret was that I didn't listen to my doctor when I was only 30 pounds overweight. I wish I had done something earlier and taken my health more seriously.

Here's a whole message board dedicated to regrets on all procedures.  You're right to shy away from Lapband.  I've seen too many bad things with it in the last couple of years.  If you have a true addiction to food, seek help NOW.  It can turn into another addiction, be it alchohol, drugs, sex, gambling....it's there and you can't ignore it.  Learn how to control it and fix it.

Hell no.

Last night while I was slinging muddy tree limbs from my yard to the curb, sweating like a horse but not hurting, I kept thinking, Thank God I don't still weigh 359 pounds. Because I couldn't do this.

Is it easy? No. Do I make all right choices? No. But the life I have now kicks the ass of the one I had at my highest weight.

Please, please do your own research. Don't let a doctor sell you the surgery he likes. Get the one that's right for you.

Like many others have said - my one & ONLY regret is that I didn't do it sooner!

I had the VSG 14 months ago.  I have lost 95 lbs.  I feel great, and I have had no complications.  I could give a crap if someone judges me.  I will not gain the weight back because I am in control of my own destiny.  I am still addicted to food, and I watch everything that I put in my mouth.  If I make a bad choice, then I get my tail back on track.  For once in my life, I have taken control of this situation.  I don't have an alcohol addiction because I choose not to drink

I don't have a single regret except waiting to have it done.

I had weight loss surgery in 2011 and again bypass in 2016. I was 365 LBS TO 238 lbs at my lowest. I started gaining weight in 2019 until I started to get it together mentally. Food was my comfort as a child it was the only thing I could control since I grow up with an alcoholic father and a mentally ill mother (trauma). I am an only child and lived with the fear of everything abandonment self-loathing and the shame of being poor. Today I am in recovery from weight, food, and mental health (depression and anxiety).

I can tell you this from my own experience until you deal with your trauma and most if not all of us have some kind of pain. Then you may turn to something else to comfort yourself and your pain. I did shopping and alcohol. Until recently I stopped drinking on July 31, 2023. I've chosen to stop it was destroying me and my marriage. I was an angry drunk, to say the least.

I have no regret about having weight loss surgery it saved my life. I had numerous health issues. I am down to 230 lbs. and healthier and stronger mentally to boot.

Yikes! I am just seeing now that this post is 11 years old but was posted in newsletter today being new.

I don't know what you decided but I hope you had a good outcome with any of the surgeries you might possibly have elected.

peace, Lisa
