I work at a Bariatric Cafe & need to choose protein bars.
I love some power crunch, Oh yea, and some pure proteins. Some Atkins are great - but with soy proteins and too much SA - they do not work well for me.
Be aware of Quest bars. Even though on paper or on the internet...they look great - but I dumped so badly on them, And had severe sugar high and lows. There are bunch of people post op RNY who also dump on them (or on 1/2 of one). My body reacted to the Quest bars as if they had 20+ pure sugar - my blood sugar went from 100 to 200 in just 15-20 min after I ate one bar. Not good. I also gained app 7 lbs in 1-2 months when I was eating them (as snacks - instead of my Power crunch bars). I was able to lose that weight when I get off them ( it took me 2-3 weeks). I also had severe RH (reactive hypoglycemia) episodes while I was eating them - not knowing that they were the one that caused that. Scary. I know some people can tolerate them. But - IMO - the same people can or are able to tolerate more sugar and carbs.

In my case I still can control my RH by restriction of the carbs, adding some fat, and eating often. It may be nice to have some ready to eat bars...

Cyn,
My favorite is the "Simply" bar. Google it; not available in many retail stores; I have mine shipped.
Tastes like different flavors of rice crispy treats to me.
Now, while it doesn't replace a candy bar (and I never found a protein bar that did), I would eat these regardless of the fact that what led me to the bars were my food allergies. These are the "cleanest" you can find on the market. I need gluten free & lactose free, also strive for organic and no GMOs.
They are not whey protein (obviously, with no lactose), but soy protein. That, I'm not happy with, because I also avoid any GMOs, but I have to compromise on occasion. Also, a lot of organic ingredients.
One bar = 16g protein, 150 calories, and 3g or sugar. They're low GI, vegan, and kosher. I don't know if all the stats are the same for all the varieties, but close.
I think there are 6 varieties, and I like them all. When you buy by the case, you buy 5 and get the 6th for free. You can also buy a variety case, so some sort of sampler just to try out.
I love KIND also, but the carb/protein ratio isn't good enough for me to consider these anymore than an occasional treat, or something I will eat after a long run.

Normal BMI (24.9) = 159#: would have to compromise my muscle mass to get here without plastics, so this is not a goal.
