OT Repost: Tattooed? Share your story

If, as the sayings go, “a picture is worth a thousand words" and “every picture tells a story", what does it say about a person when the picture in question has actually become a part of their human anatomy?

Tattoos and those who have them used to be considered to be from the “wrong side of life": prisoners, gang members, bikers, sailors doing god-only-knows-what with god-knows-who as they travelled the world. “Good people" from “good families" wouldn’t be caught dead getting one.

A tattooed woman was nearly unthinkable, unless you were to visit your local freak show or, perhaps, a Polynesian island.

We all know that things have changed quite a bit now that tattooing is in its heyday. In fact, it’s become so commonplace as to be mundane. And yes, you might say that in some cases, we’ve gone more than a bit too far. Although, upon reflection (and some in-depth Googling), “a bit" may be somewhat of an understatement.

Yes, that IS an eyeball getting tattooed.

But what’s the story behind all the ink we’re seeing in today’s society? It can’t all be explained by too much booze while on Spring Break in Cancun and too many bachelor parties in Vegas. While a lot of ink can be passed off as a mere impulse buy, one that’s no different from a Snickers bar at the cash register, most body art can be explained in deeply personal terms: “I had this done when . . . “, “I got this design to honor  . . ."

There are serious reasons and crazy reasons. Sad ones and joyful ones. There are tattoos to memorialize lost loved ones and to act a reminder of good times. They celebrate birth and death and pretty much everything in between.

To those of you who are among the inked, what was your reason? Why that design, on that part of your body, andthat point in your life? What were you thinking? Were you thinking at all, or acting on impulse? Was it your first and last tattoo, or just another in a long line in your, shall we say, personal collection?

I want to hear about it. I want to know your inspiration or, if you will, your INKSPIRATION. “My Inkspiration: The Tattooed Tell Their Tales" is a work in progress which will, if God is willing, allow me – as researcher/author and, at times, photographer – to tell your story.

I want to hear the where and why and when behind what is now a part of you forever. Tell me your story. Or, “stories", if you have more than one. If there’s one thing I like more than looking at and admiring someone’s body art, it’s hearing about the genesis of its very existence.

For more information on how you can be a part of this, email me at [email protected]. And let YOUR tale be told!

When 9/11 hit, I saw a gentleman on CNN with an American flag tattoo on his arm so he would never forget. Well, my husband and I both got tattoos the following week.  I had a heart with a streamer of the American flag and the words "not forgotten" 9-11-01 on my upper left arm.   I have never regretted it.  It may not sound like alot but I was 49!

I have a hummingbird and a dragonfly on each shoulder, because I just really like them. I also have my eyeliner done via tattoo. In fact I've been contemplating having it done bolder. Let me tell you, obviously I like the permanent makeup done, but it's pretty painful. I had a doctor ask me if I had a high threshold for pain. I told him about the permanent eyeliner and he said, never mind, I get it. Lol.

Right ankle I have two blue roses one more of a bud than the other it represents my daughters and has their names on either side of the stem. At the time they were little so the size represents that. The blue flower is because it is unique as my daughters are.

Right hip is a blue rose with a daggar through it and blood dripping off. It's a cover up of a man's name I was deeply in love with. The blood dripping from the daggar is because that is what he did to my heart. The blue rose obviously being me the mom of the two smaller blue roses on the ankle.

Above left breast is a cover up I hate and wish I didn't have... nothing to say about it.

My right shoulder is my most current and for me the one that means more to me than anything. My grandson was born 3 years ago last month and I am a photographer. I took his first "portrait" in the hospital room when he was about 8 hours old. We lost him at one day before he was to be 5 mo old in a tragedy. I have that first portrait tattooed on my shoulder with one addition... it has a halo over his sleeping head. His name is below it along with the date of his birth and of his passing. It's on that shoulder because i sleep on my left side and that way he is always asleep on his grammy each night comforting me.

OMG  this made me cry.  You also have an angel on your shoulder looking over you, IMO. Thanks for sharing.

I'm sorry didn't mean to make you cry.

But as the OP stated they are all done for so many different and often personal reasons. I thought I'd share mine. Maybe it will make someone beside my mother look at tattoos differently. Sometimes they are a big part of the healing process.

I had eyebrows done and was going to have eyeliner but stopped with the brows.  I would have stopped at one brow had it not looked funny.

I recently got my first tattoo.  It is the Superman "House of El" shield on my left ankle.  I do love all things Superman, but that is not the reason I got it.  It has been a rough road with a lot of speedbumps along the way, but I have overcome.   If I had  not stood up for myself and made myself heard I would be paralzyed right now.  And now that I have steel parts, I kinda feel like the Woman of Steel.
You, I've mistaken for destiny, but the truth is my legacy is not up to my genes...
