excellus blue cross blue shield in ny

My husbands insurance kicks in on 6/01 and I am seriously considering the RNY surgery. I mentioned this to my sister in law and she told me first that excellus bcbs does not cover WLS and that second I will end up paying about $5000 out of pocket for the surgery. Does anyone have any expirience with this insurance company? Any advise on what I can look forward to in terms of what hoops I will have to jump through? Thanks in advance.

 Talk to the insurance company after June 1.  Every company has different rules, coverage and limitations.  

I live in NY and have BCBS.  My surgery was covered and all I had to pay was a co-pay for my hospital stay and for my visit with the nutritionist.  You should call BCBS once you have coverage.  Whether or not they will cover it will be dependent on what is in your husband's plan.  Also check with the surgeon you are looking at going to because they may not accept BCBS as an insurance (the baratriac surgery group in my area didn't accept it for a few years).
