In many cases, patients believe SURGERY ALONE will resolve wt issues.  Behavior modification is a key element in success from WLS.  In a select few cases, there may be reasons for a reversal or a revision. One common issue is from the lap band surgeyr. Many pateint opt for this surgery because it's "less invasive".  But my surgeon's surgical nurse has seen plenty of data in the surgeon's office, stating that the band surgery has the most complaints and is often revised to a RNY or sleeve.  Choose your surgery with these factors in mind, as many insurance companies will not pay for revision surgeries. I know of only one revision my surgeon has done and it was a band patient. She had been to her old surgeon almost once a week for over a year. When the surgeon began having her enter his office through the employee only entrance, she strongly suspected a poor resolution.  The surgeon told her it was all her fault, not his surgery.  My surgeon immediately noted severe band slippage when he did her RNY a few months ago.  There are some revisions done because of complications, but the main reason is non-compliance.  I am talking about those who say that they ate a whole pan of brownies this week and still lost 3 pounds.  They think the surgery is a cure and continue with their lack of exercise and poor eating.  Then they complain when they regain and think a revision will let them eat what they want and lose the weight again.

The surgery is a tool and RNY in particular will allow for weight loss for about two years, even if the person does not follow their plan.  Then regain happens.  If a person does not deal with their eating and exercise problems, they will not achieve long term weight loss success from any surgery.

A good number of revisions are from former lap banders that were fed a line of BS about what the band would do. Then when they found out it rarely works they had to revise to a surgery that did work. Or their bands slipped or eroded in them and had to be removed and revised to a different surgery. Of course there is an element that needs revision because of non-compliance also but until they get counceling to learn to deal with their emotions a revision won't help them. There are as many reasons as there are people *****vise!
