I have heard a lot of people say they had to loose 20-50 lbs before they could have the surgery to prove they could loose after. do most surgeons require you to loose weight first?

My understanding is that people are required to lose weight  either due to surgeon compliance or insurance requirements.

Neither my surgeon nor my insurance company required that - but I had 20 years of failed weight loss attempts recorded with my PCP, and multiple comorbidities.

Check your policy and surgeon - that's the best way to find out.

I just had to discuss weight loss with my PCP for 6 months prior to scheduling surgery, but really only was required to not gain weight.  I did end up losing 10 lbs during this and another 10 lbs during my 2 week preop diet.

Thanks for the incite I am just worried about that since my BMI is 36.1 and my ins cutoff is 35. I just might call my Dr today and ask sounds simple enough. I think I am just a worry wart and nervous since tomorrow is my first consult with the Dr.

You might also want to check with your insurance company - plans (even from the same company) may have different requirements.  For example, mine just required a history of failed weight loss attempts and BMI above 35 with 1 or more comorbidities, but DD's policy with the same insurance company and same program name but from a different employer explicitly excludes any WLS for any reason.

Doctors may not always know the ins and outs of YOUR policy, but your insurance company WILL.
