100% Juice & Oranges?

What did your dieticians tell you about 100% Juice? I know the natural sugar is okay, but was anyone told it wasn't really the best thing to drink because of the calories that you really would be better off getting from the fruit itself? Or anything else about it? I feel like I was told not to drink it... but I can't remember why... lol

And while I'm at it... does anyone know anything about not eating 'fruits with membranes, such as oranges' after surgery? why is that? and are there other fruits 'with membranes'? And does that apply to orange juice too?

lol can you tell I love my juice?? (: Thanks guys!

I would rather eat an orange, than drink juice and that is from many years of dieting.  I have never heard anything about not eating membranes.  I eat oranges every day.

Juice is high in calories and could add #s over time.  Also, your more likely to dump from all the sugar.  Think about how much you pour into a glass and call a serving.  Then imagine how many oranges for example you'd need to squeeze to get that much juice.  I was told to dilute the juice if I was to drink it.  I quit drinking juice years ago due to the caloric value and started eating frest fruit.  Thus, I have no interest in diluting juice so I can have a little.  I'm allowed 10 gms of sugar at a meal.  I don't know how many sugar gms are in what you are drinking but I imagine it is high.

No liquid calories, basically.

It would make more sense to eat a whole fruit with fibers and all, if you can handle it.  I was unable to, and I have texture issues with fruit, so I didn't for a very long time.

I was allowed juice in the clear liquids stage, and only if it was diluted 1 part juice, 2 parts water. Beyond that, juice is off the table due to the calories and the concentration of sugar. It takes a LOT for me to dump, but it doesn't take a lot for me to have a blood sugar spike and settle into a carb coma (that 30 minutes where you just have to nap to recover from the blood sugar spike). When we drink juice we are getting the calories and sugar of multiple pieces of fruit. Depending on the size of the glass, maybe up to 5 pieces.

The membrane thing was only during the first 6 weeks. After that no restrictions.

"I know the natural sugar is okay,"

It isn't really. Just because it's natural doesn't mean you won't:

1) dump (if you dump)

2) gain weight

3) have an insulin spike from consuming it

Our bodies are not meant to consume large amounts of fructose when it comes down to it. If I have a glass of OJ, it's a 4oz glass with a meal and it's a special deal. It's so special, I can't remember the last time I had some.

"does anyone know anything about not eating 'fruits with membranes, such as oranges' after surgery?"

No such thing. Someone sold you a bill of goods on that one. Some programs do say not to eat coconut or at least to be careful with it. It can get stuck in the stoma if you go crazy eating it.

she wasnt sold bill of goods on that one - early post op, it is very difficult to swallow fruits with membranes or skins - it specifically in my book and also in the book of 2 other surgeons that I had gone to prior to the on I decided on.  when I finally decided to try a grape or a piece of a tangerine - I threw them both up and it was because the skins/membranes got stuck.  the stoma is the size of an M&M  after surgery and if you try to fit skins and or membranes through, they just arent going to fit

I'm essentially echoing MacMadame and MM above -

No liquid calories, and I'm not on board saying that natural sugar is ok at all.

If you're going to have fruit, EAT it.  Don't take all the good fiber out of it and use that sugar to spike your blood sugar.  Remember - your insulin spikes, you start storing fat instead of burning fat.

And the natural sugar of fruits - fructose - is metabolized by the human liver directly into fatty acids.  This is not what you want.  Other than a little vitamin C, it's a LOT of calories for little nutrition.

I was told to never drink anything with calories other than a protein shake or during the first month - a small glass of milk.  Drinking calories is a waste of calories and can be better utilized.  I was told to avoid the membranes of oranges and tangerines early out and to be careful of skins - grapes, apples - and even plums, nectarines, peaches if you are really early - I pealed my nectarines and peaches at first until I knew I could swallow them sucessfully because I had trouble with grapes for almost a year.  I loved tangerines and the membranes were tough for me during the first few months.

Once I was a 2 years out, I started drinking Trop 50 - it is basically watered down orange juice but it doesnt taste like it and now comes in many flavors and only 50 calories but dont do it until you are close to goal or it will slow down your weight loss and then only as a treat -  not everyday

Mine said initially to drink it diluted 50/50 with water.  I don't drink juice - it's just liquid calories that doesn't fill you up.  I'd rather eat an orange instead.  :)

I haven't had any troubles with any fruits - i used to peel apples early out but haven't in over a year.
