Has anyone ever tried fundraising to assist with surgery costs??

I am just curious. I thought is would be a cool idea. But I have received some major negative responses by others, even being accussed of running a scam. Yikes. What are your thoughts???

Nope, never considered it and would never consider it.  But, that's just me.  I am very independent, and I don't like asking anybody for anything.  I also don't think it is anybody else's responsiblity to foot the bill to correct my obesity.  I am the one who shoveled the food into my mouth and scarfed it down thus leading to massive weight gained.  And, I am the one who owned the responsibilty for it and took the measures necessary to correct it whi*****luded weight loss surgery and loads of therapy.  I did what I had to do to get my surgery covered by insurance which meant changing insurance and waiting it out.  I just cannot even imagine having a fundraiser for an elective surgery that I need because of my eating habits.  Like I said earlier, that's just me, though.  Others may think differently.

I self paid for surgery twice, once for a band and again for a revision to a sleeve.  As you write, we got ourselves in this mess, we get ourselves out.  I would feel a bit resentful if someone suggested I should help pay for elective surgery.  What is next?  Plastics?

I remember one girl posting years ago, she wanted WLS in the worst way.  She would go dumpster diving every AM before work and find treasures and sell them on ebay.  She waited until she earned the money herself and then went to MX and had SAFE surgery.  Others have gotten 2nd and 3rd jobs, jobs working out of their homes, cleaning others houses, refinancing their homes, borrowing money... If someone wants surgery badly enough they will find a way to earn it themselves.

@ boldnbariatric.  Wow, that's a cool story about the lady who would dumpster dive and sell her treasures to save up for surgery.  That is taking initiative.  Gotta respect someone that does that.  That story just really touched me.  Thanks for sharing that.

I am a bariatric self pay patient myself and have worked in the medical field for 20 years... For the record, I paid for everything myself without any help from anyone!!!... BUT, my obesity did not come from shoving food into my mouth... I think it is a little unfair to simply write off this person's question with what you said... Your journey may have been about consuming too much food and not wanting to ask for help but that is only PART (and a small one) of the reasons people are obese... There are medical conditions, severe accidents that leave people immobile, and other just as prominent reasons why obesity exists... I for one see no problem in doing fundraisers, raffles, asking family and friends for help or doing anything and everything you can to get yourself healthy... Go for it!!!

Nope. As the other person said - it would be asking others for money for what I wanted.  Asking someone to pay for my medical bills.

I think you would find that a lot of people would resent being placed in the position where they were expected to contribute for your surgery...

There have been a couple of time in my life where family members have done fund raisers for personal causes and I know I have not cared for it at all.

HAHA!  I would never in a million years give someone even a penny to go to Almanza.  I'd rather they wait until they can afford a better surgeon.

Bad experience with Dr. Almanza??? Any suggestions? There seems to be good and bad comments for EVERY surgeon.
