i have decided to have surgery in the Dominican Republic for 2 reasons, reason #1 insurance does not cover morbid obesity! Reason # 2; its where i am from, i have lots of family there and my aunt recently got VSG there and has recommended her doctor who is doing my surgery for $8500.00 , shes doing great and he is very well  recognized for his work there. my question is for those who have gotten wls outside of the states, who do you go to for check up and progress and support doctor wise when you come back?my aunt saw her doctor every 2 weeks for the 1st 4 weeks and then once a month in between other visits. i am worried that if i dint have a do tor here to monitor my weight loss i will not succeed

Talk to your primary care physician and see if they will see you.   If they support your decision, they will code your labs appropriately so your insurance will cover it.  I do have a gastroenterologist (my insurance doesn't require referrals), if I think I need an endoscopy.

Quite frankly (and this may not be the best decision), when I received notice that my PCP was going on personal leave right before my procedure in Mexico, I decided to have it done anyway.  I'm going to need to find a new PCP at the three month mark, and that is something I am worried about.   (My surgeon recommends 3 and six month checkups and labs).  If I can't find someone, I'm going to go back to my surgeon, because the cost of getting my labs done in Mexico plus the flight down is actually cheaper than self-paying for a full panel here in the United States.  Since you have family in the DR, I can see you making a similar decision.
