The 10 Best and Worst Sweeteners

Not all sugar alternatives are created equal

It's common knowledge that too much sugar is a bad thing. But that doesn't mean that all of the "natural" alternatives are any better for you. Take agave nectar, for example. Even though you can find them in health stores, it's best to keep them out of your cart. Why? Because many agave nectars consist of 70 to 90 percent fructose—more than what's found in high-fructose corn syrup! "Agave nectar is probably one of the worst sweeteners on the market, and it's deceptive because it's been marketed as a healthy alternative," says nutritionist Jonny Bowden, PhD. "Everybody thinks it's a health food." Here are 10 of the best and worst sweeteners in the supermarket—and remember to use all of them in moderation.

Thank you for the info. I may have to re-consider using splenda. This is all I use.

I read this just before I was about to buy some Agave. I think to stop all my confusion, i will just stick with pure cane sugar , and use it in moderation. I do like honey on my  100% wheat toast in the morning, but have to admit, all artifical sweetners have me concerned what THEY are all made from?! I recieve their newsletters , glad i read this.

You CAN retrain Ur taste buds ! AND  it only takes a mere few weeks of self discipline ! .

Most Americans  eat  highly sweetened ( inflammatory  and disease producing ) hugely caloric food  ..but  the good news is ..You don't need to .....

if you cut out the sugar .. you WILL find that fruit , maybe a bit of splenda  and spices are  PERFECTLY  adequate high fiber , low calorie  healthy sweets !

try it  grow a toothsome six pack rather than flab

Wow. This article is terrible. It is full of scientifically inaccurate and fear mongering information. It claims that asparatame can cause an increase in blood sugar levels - this is completely false and has been studied extensively in humans. It also says "drinking two diet sodas a day can lead to a 500 percent greater increase in waist size", what does that even mean?!

Sucralose is going to threaten our entire eco-system? There is no evidence for this even offered! What a ridiculous statment. And for the good ones, the only reasons offered seem to be that they are 'natural'. Give me a break, heroin is 'natural', that doesn't mean it's automatically 'good'. None of the 'good' sweetners are calorie free, or even as low as sucralose (which is not actually exactly the same as the brand name Splenda).

You want sweetness without the calories of sugar, the only way to do that is with an artificial sweetner. All of them have been studied thoroughly and have been found to be perfectly safe.

I start to wonder .. what are you selling? are you in industry that makes sarcalose? It looks that way. Anytime someone voices anything negative about the toxins - you came out of of no-were and contradict..
Yet you can not offer any real study that show that these toxins are are safe...

You either work for the manufacturer or get paid every time you post something that tells people that the DDT like substance (sucralose) is safe...
Interesting...

Actually I'm a Prosecutor and I have a strong dislike of people circulating false and fear mongering information. I make my decisions on the basis of evidence like the studies in the links in my post above. I believe everyone should have access to good, factual information to make decisions on and this is a personal pet peeve of mine. There is no evidence, period, that artificial sweetners are harmful to humans. Eating sugar is not a better alternative for people struggling with weight.

Evidence? I am walking evidence.
There is no evidence, period, that artificial sweetners are NOT harmful to humans.

What are you talking about? You aren't evidence, you are an anecdote. I mean credible, scientific evidnce from properly conducted trials. Aspartame gives me gas, so I don't eat it. I don't run around telling people that it is poisoning my guts, because I know better from having read studies about it. I just happen to have a sensitivity to it. Big difference.

I posted the results of a toxicology study on sucralose that found that it was perfectly safe, meaning, not harmful, in humans. It's not worth discussing this with as you any further as you are not being logical or reasonable. I doubt you even read the links I provided. Enjoy your ignorance... I hear it is bliss.
