I also am a psychiatric clinician and bipolar myself .. We have the added joy of dealing with our mood disorder. I got manic after losing 120 lbs. Led to me drinking too much and making some poor decisions. The only one *****ally noticed was my husband and our best friend. I am not saying that your drinking is related to mood changes. I am just saying it does put "us" at a higher risk. Keep in therapy, AA is a great resource, but for many working in therapy works well..(as you know) Thanks for the honesty !
There is a difference between alcohol use, abuse and dependence. I do not wa(n)t to cross the line into abuse, becaust that is where trouble starts.
The reality is that you if you are honest with yourself have already crossed the line you are abusing alcohol.
Your first part of this post put it really well.
You are saving your drinking day.
You are drinking when stressed.
You dran****il you were intoxicated enough that a bartender did not want you to drive and tried to sober you up.
Now later in this same posting you are stating you are not an alcoholic citing only the strictest definition of the terms.
You admit to an addictive personality citing your own substance abuse of cannabis during college. Then acknowledge that you were drinking and by definition binge drinking at times. I understand you are a therapist and also under going therapy currently.
That said it does not mitigate the reality that you by your own admission have abused alcohol. Unfortunately the reality is as a women who has had a RNY, you are at risk for alcohol binging/ poisoning on a much smaller amount of alcohol. So why risk it?
There are times in every persons life when faced with a behavioral issue that is affecting you adversely you have to stop explaining it or even trying to rationalizing it. The why or how no longer matter, what matters is preventing the issue from reoccuring.
I hope you get the therapy you need to deal with this issue before you destroy yourself.
