Can't seem to get a grip these days.... Crying, Crying , Crying.. I know i am crying alot these days. I refuse to go on antidepressants. I have alot of happy things going on in my life BUT when I have some bad news i can't seem to let it go..Got a phone call from the doctor himself  yesterday said I have a nodule on my thyroid after having an x-ray done..I am having trouble swallowing. Here i am engaged and very happy with a few new hobbies in my life, and living  life after weight loss. Now i am full of cancer. Cerival cancer now thyroid cancer..

Wish i had a Wls friend here..If i knew someone that is going through similar situation, no support meetings here in my home town. the one hospital that does offer it, you can only attend if you had your wls at 'that' hospital..I could deal with my oncoming treatments with this cancer..the one woman i supported her through her wls ended up regaining all her weight back so i left her,..mentally i am a mess right now..My fiance' is kinda at a loss when it comes to my type of support that i need. I had a wonderful Christmas at my fiance's gathering of 60 people that showed up , everyone loves me in his family, one of his sisters said to me I am her favorite. LoL...I said if i am such a favorite why arent I married to your brother yet? it was kinda funny the way it happened, a few minutes later my fiance said let's get married now..well I'm not ready mentally..

50's is a bad time to have wls..menopause messes with your head even more along with the changing attitude after wls..maybe it's just me...its nice weather here in the 50's , i shouldnt be down so much. BUT i am. I need a wls friend ......Wendy

Wow, your plate is full!

A few observations....

1. Anti-Depressants have gotton a bad rap for "masking" symptoms ... they actually have a very clinical application and it sounds like you could use this assistance. Don't let pop-psychology get in the way of you using what is available to you at a time when you may need it.

How strong and helpful do you think you can be in this amazingly difficult time if you can't stop crying! Also, you don;t need to be on them forever. Let them help you get through one trouble at a time and THEN reevaluate how you feel about taking them.

2. Sounds like your fiance loves you... Marry him if he is a good guy!!! I suspect it would be nice to not be so "alone" now.

3. You sound like you like to blame everything on yourself. This is something you should challange.... You did not "cause" your cancer, your depression, or your menopause.

4. WLS in your 50's is actually a wonderful thing. Sounds like your problems stem from depression, cancer, and lonliness... none of these have anything to do with WLS.

Good luck, Wendy. I will be thinking warm thoughts for you.

Take a deep breath - do not panic.  Thyroid cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer.  "Although a diagnosis of thyroid or any type of cancer is frightening, the vast majority of thyroid cancers is highly treatable and in most cases curable with surgery and other treatments"

I am surprised your doctor would CALL YOU to tell you this with only an X-ray ...  please read...
"
To make an accurate diagnosis of thyroid cancer, the thyroid cells will need to be closely examined. Since a cancer cell looks different than a normal cell, the type of thyroid cancer is determined by microscopic examination of the thyroid cells found in the nodule (neck lump) or growth. During surgery the nodule or mass can be removed and examined by a pathologist to establish the diagnosis. "

I had a lesion on my thyroid gland ... I had surgery ... I have had radioactive iodine treatment x 2 ... I AM CANCER FREE...

I have had several procedures and treatment for breast malignancies ... I
 AM CANCER FREE...

Please do not panic and please do not allow your physician to make calls with such frightening diagnosis without asking you into the office and performing more extensive tests/procedures to study the nature of the cells involved.  I can't understand a diagnosis of cancer without a pathology report done from the microscopic study of the cells involved.

Most thyroidal masses are benign ... I would take a deep breath and consult a specialist.  There are so many advances in cancer and cancer treatment that with therapy and/or surgery you can life a very productive life.

I am sorry you got scared like this ... it is twice now you have shared that your doctor calls you to tell you about cancer diagnosis without back up procedures and pathology reports and follow-up treatment ... it is very unfair for a physician to treat you thusly ...

I wish you nothing but the best in pursuing treatment for these conditions that are treatable and you can have full recovery from.

this is all new to me,    I just listen.. you know the old saying, no news is good news, but When the doctor himself called I knew I was going to get some form of bad news..,i'd been doing some tests because of my problem swallowing.  I like a simplified lifestyle and this puts more mental stress on me. thanks so much for taking your time and expressing your experiences..hugs and Peace, Love & Joy..Wendy

Wendy,

Your post says that the doctor called and said that there were nodules on your thyroid. Have they done a biopsy? The reason I ask is, I had 2 huge nodules (one was 9" and the other was 5") on my thyroid, and they just removed my thyroid. They took a picture of them (to show me, they were amazed), one looked like a heart, and the other looked like a chicken wing (LOL). They sent them off to pathology, and they came back benign. Yes, I will have to take thyroid medication for the rest of my life, but I have a life! Don't give up!! I have a friend who actually had thyroid cancer, and she is living life to the fullest, not even like anything has happened.

I feel that sometimes we are given stumbling blocks along life's journey, just so we can be a testimony to others. Think positive, and good thoughts and prayers are heading your way!

Hugs,
Lisa

That is pretty damn scary - no wonder you can't get a grip.  I have no advice other than hang until you get the diagnosis -- then you can deal with reality.  Right now, you are just dealing with godawful fear.

I'm so sorry you're having such a hard time. Sometimes just when we feel things are going perfect something else just seems to go wrong. I would like to say that I have spent many years myself taking antidepressants. I've taken them for both my Fibromyalgia and for depression. They really aren't that bad and can actually make some things easier to cope with.

When you say your doctor called and said you have a nodule and it was found during an x-ray makes me have more questions as to why you assume it is cancer. Did the doctor say it was cancerous? Did you have a biopsy to confirm it? I have had a nodule on my throid gland for years. I now go for an ultrasound every six months to watch and see if it changes in size. In the event that it does then I will have an unltrsound guided needle biopsy. The doctors are not worried because of the colors/shapes that show up on the ultrasound and it is slow growing. 95% of throid nodules are non cancerous. Thinking of you an hoping everything soo gets better for you.

"nodular disease of the thyroid is common; however, malignancy of the thyroid occurs in only 0.004% of the American population annually (12,000 new cases per y). Roughly 5% of thyroid nodules are malignant; the remainder represent a variety of benign diagnoses, including colloid nodules, degenerative cysts, hyperplasia, thyroiditis, or benign neoplasms."

Wendy, wow.  I just had my thyroid removed for the same reason.  I am on thyroid replacement medication. I had my surgery 15 December, 2011.  Okay, the surgery hurt a bit, but I only took 3 pain pills, and nothing when I was out of the hospital.
I was fearful also, I understand.  This is one of the most survivable cancers! Nothing to get all excited over, those are the facts.
I get it about the depression and crying all the time.  I suggest that you think about talking with your doc about the depression meds.  There is just so much you can do to hang in there.  I commend you for trying, however, sounds like you could use a break.
Sounds like you have a good support group, stick with them and allow your fiance to help you as much as possible.
Good luck, you are a great

I'm sorry you are having a hard time but you won't know if you have thyroid cancer until you've had a needle biopsy.  An xray can't pick up cancer cells so don't jump to the worst case scenario until you have to.  Even if it is cancer, it is likely very easy to remove.  I've had 3 needle biopsies, 2 hemi-thyroidectomies and one cancerous nodule (micropapillary carcinoma).  Multinodular goiters and cysts that were benign and cysts that were malignant.  It's a speed bump for sure but there are other things you need to focus your energy on right now.  I wish you the best.
