With RNY the new stoma is formed at the top portion of the stomach and the old remnant stomch, with valve attached, is bypassed.  It doesn't mean there is a problem with the procedure though.

That's a very interesting article.

I have a question, because I don't know the *why's* of RnY. Why is it necessary to sacrifice the pyloric valve? Why can't they just leave the pyloric valve so the stomach doesn't empty into the intestine so fast and cause dumping and rapid sugar drops?

There's gotta be a medical reason, but I don't know what it is.

That IS a very good question.

The answer---Ignorance? Easier? Their 'give a damn' is busted?

such an excellent post - it ought to be stickied at the top of the page and required reading for everyone.

ETA: I mean Ms Batt's post, of course.

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.

PM me if you are interested in either of these.

@ Christopher, I am suprised that you say people can out eat the DS.  That is the "Gold" standard for people that cannot eat less because the malabsorption does all the work. I am just curious as to what you have found to say as much?  I cant imagine that would be accepted on this site w/o great debate.
@ the OP, the sleeve seems to be a good alternative and if you had good results with the band.  That is the next step for many who had the band first.

It IS  possible to out-eat the DS---but it takes a lot of effort. (*grin*) And don't be fooled---the DS DOES
cause significant restriction in the amount of food we an eat at one sitting---just like the Sleeve/VSG does.

It's possible to out-eat ANY  WLS, and the DS is no exception. But since the DS causes permanent malabsorption of about 50% of protein, 40% of complex carbs and nearly 80% malabsorption of fat, it's pretty hard to out-eat the DS.

Keep in mind that these are AVERAGES. Everyone is different, and every body responds differently to WLS.
