My first gardening book was  " Square Foot Gardening "  by  Mel Bartholomew which makes  the  idea and practice of planning a garden  and succession cropping very  accesible and non- intimidating ( and helps U create GORGEOUS French-style  formal vegetable gardens too if U are inclined to go that far ) and the second was " Gardening Without Work  by " Ruth Stout

 http://www.motherearthnews.com/Organic-Gardening/2004-02-01/Ruth-Stouts-System.aspx

which is all  about  making great garden soil and a weed free garden through deep mulch ....

both methods work  great  for me and use them both to this day .

Just reading seed catalogs is a great  way to get inspired -  Johnny's  selected seeds has an amazing one , Seed Starter's  Exchange another -  and White Flower Farms  send out a GORGEOUS  catalog of  flowering plants but also heirloom vegetables  in  each season ... U can order any of these free online ...

Your garden is very pretty.  I love fresh vegetables.  With me and hubby both working full time jobs and hauling kids around, there is no time to garden.  But, lucky for me, my Dad loves to garden.  So, he grows it, he and my mom pick it, and I swing by their house and pick it up and go home and cook it and eat it. Now, that's a good deal.  My mom and I can some things and put some things up in the freezer to have all year long.

I wish I could keep a garden, but the squirrels would destroy it.

The greedy jokers even ate my fall pumpkin decorations.

Sounds like you need to be making squirrel stew!

It's too late, MsBatt!

My husband has already named a couple of the regulars.  They come to the front door and beg for food.  He makes them peanut butter crackers and they take it right out of his hands.

Yep---too late! Once you name 'em, it's too late to eat 'em. That's why I never could have a pet calf or pig.

Actually, what's "simply not true" is that anyone has EVER said that the DS is the ONLY surgery that works long term. Show me who said that and when; bet you can't. The FACT is that the DS is statistically the procedure MOST LIKELY to result in long-term success. "Most likely" does not equate to "the only." Nice try, though   :)
