VSG and feeding tube

Someone recently told me she had decided to have RNY instead of VSG because if she had the sleeve, she would not be able to have a feeding tube if she ever got cancer.  I'm a little confused.  I don't know if she meant a G tube or NG tube or what.  But is there some reason people with VSG could not have a feeding tube?

No, there isn't. You're right in what you're probably thinking: a VSG removesmost of the stomach size but leaves the plumbing COMPLETELY normal.

Highest weight: 335 lbs, BMI 50.9
Pre-op weight: 319 lbs, BMI 48.5
Current range: 140-144, BMI 21.3 - 22

175+ lbs lost, maintaining since February 2012

Yeah, I knew that.  I didn't think there was any reason you could not have a G tube or NG tube.  I was wondering if there was some reason a G tube could not go into the part of the stomach that was left, like maybe it could only be inserted in certain spots and that was the part that had been removed, but that didn't seem likely to me.  I was thinking the person I was talking to must be confused or misunderstood something, but wanted to check.  Thanks for you help.

As with the RNY you do not want them to place an NG tube blind, but if your friend was to need one there would be no issue at all with her having one as long as they knew beforehand not to go in blind. As for a G-tube, from all the reading I have done it does not seem that that would be an issue either.

Ah, see, I did not know they shouldn't do the NG tube blind if you had VSG.  Maybe that's what she was thinking of and thought that meant she wouldn't be able to have one at all.

Yeah, it actually hold's true for any bariatric surgery, while the risk of damage might be lower then with an RNY patient there is still potential for problems even with a band.

I have a DS, and so pretty much a VSG stomach. I recently had a 'blind' NG tube inserted.

Just for what it's worth.

I would guess that most of the time they would go in fine blind.  But it's my understanding that there is the potential there for problems, even if they don't occur that often.

I'm sorry to hear you had to have one inserted.  I had one once.  It was not a pleasant experience.  Didn't hurt once it was in, but going in, OMG.

Yeah, once in, it wasn't painful---annoying as hell, but not painful. But going in---!!!  They tried both sides of my nose, broke some of those little navicule-thingies, and wound up sending for a pediatric tube before they finally got it in. (Like they couldn't have STARTED with the little one???)

Yeah, it took three tries to get mine in.  And the stuff they sprayed up my nose to make it numb did not seem to help.  It didn't feel so great coming out, either.  I really hope I never need one again.
