Any particular issues for vegetarians??

You come talk to me in a couple of years about how that's going, n00b.

Let me guess. I bet you think you eat a GEO and GMO free diet, right? Since you are so, um, KNOWLEDGEABLE about your food and lifestyle and all.....

I just can't see the wisdom, personally, in basing a diet largely on heavily processed soy products.  How is that healthy?  I think soy in moderation is fine, but soy for the main source of protein in a diet is pretty crazy.

I was a vegetarian for 7 years, until I got pregnant and needed meat to grow a baby.  The reality is that animal protein is more bioavailable to humans.

I'm all about "to each his/her own" in such choices. I just get cranky when livestock producers get unfairly smeared with stupid propaganda.

We have a very militant vegetarian club on my school campus this year. If there's anything I hate, it's dishonesty in the name of spreading a belief system, and that's what these particular people are doing. If I could find one or two more ag-connected students, I'd start a bit of militancy of my own. I don't have the energy to do it all myself.

I made a t-shirt a couple days ago that I will enjoy wearing. There are five separate agribusinesses in my family. So my t shirt says, "My family fed 775 people today. When did 'Agriculture' become a dirty word?" (The average American farmer/rancher feeds 155 people according to 2010 statistics.) Perhaps that will scare up a farmer or two for my project :-).

Me too, Elizabeth.  I hope people who are basing their diets largely on processed soy are learning all sides of that story, though.  It messed up my thyroid.  You can be vegetarian without eating tons and tons of soy!  It's harder though.

I am puzzled by the notion that it's good to consume all those "fake meat" products, which are by definition highly processed and altered foods.

Of course it's possible for some people to live just fine on a plant based diet. If you're going to eat real food, though, it's going to take a higher volume of plant source protein food to get enough protein in. That's how it works. Animal products are protein dense, plant products less so.

I love their products! I also use MSF products, as well. I like their crumbles in recipes like chili, and others that call for ground beef. I recently used the crumbles in a goat cheese tart recipe (I'm not vegan). Really good! Other ways I supplement protein is fish, eggs, beans, cheese, & Greek yogurt.

I have been Vegetarian for about 20 some-odd years (though I do eat meat on very rare occassions). I struggle with low iron, but other than that, nothing really related to the fact that I don't generally eat meat.
