You didn't say which kind of surgery and it does matter.  If it was a DS, there are only two in California worth going to.  There are many RNY surgeons and I'm sure you'll find one with no problem and no program fee.

That is terrible.  I would look for a surgeon that doesn't charge a program fee.

What is the fee for?  How much is it?  Those fees have always sounded like a way to get additional cash from the patient.

The surgeon should have mentioned "this fee" up front.   He may have said it, and you may have thought the insurance would pay.  These fees are "CRAP" and are supposedly for nutritional visits (??), possible shrink visits and support meetings.  My surgeon charges no program fees, yet offers 4 support group meetings a month, at no cost at all.  If the fee is low, I'd consider paying the fee. But, I've also heard of fees running from $2500 to $4000 on this forum. DAVE

Most surgeons around me do charge a program fee.  It covers stuff not covered by insurance, like the dietician, support groups, pre op classes, written materials (we got a huge binder of info, too bad much of it was wrong).  But around here they charge about $200, not $2900.  Why is it that much?  I'd be tempted to change surgeons too.  And why did they even schedule surgery before you paid it?  Why wait until the last minute to tell you?
