Informative posts about the DS and Why they Happen

I am at a conference for Bariatric Physicians.  I will grant you that surgery in general is viewed as a last resort, an admission of failure and a source of shame.  Per these folk, surgical patients are prone to every evil side effect under the sun, are never healthy and always miserable.  It's kind of fun to be healthy, happy and running amuck in spite of them.

Anyway, I'd just like to point out that Diana and other like her  with pro DS posts are obviously needed.  I'm at a conference of 500 bariatric practitioners.  We've met 1, one, un, uno, a singleton who knows what the DS is.  He's from Duke University and apparently they aren't just good at basketball there.

The doc who is presenting the "Oh my gawd, they've given up and are having surgery" talk tomorrow  will discuss Band, RNY and Sleeve, no DS.  In fact, when Steve heard him speak at the ASBP conference in MAryland, this doc swore up, down and sideways that the Duodenal Switch was NO LONGER BEING PERFORMED IN THE US.

Based on the syllabus for tomorrow's talk, he ain't learned a damn thing since having a real live DS'er in his lecture.  Tomorrow he will have 2 of us and 25 others sitting in our little corner of TX cheering us on.

So when you see a pro-DS thread, please remember, we are in the minority and we are fighting against falsehoods, stereotypes and presumptions.  Doctors who do weight loss for a living lump us in the same category as the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny.

If the docs don't know, it becomes incumbent upon those of us who do to get the word out by any means necessary.

If you have your surgery, happy day, don't mind us.

If you haven't had surgery yet or are in need of revision, we are here for you.  Object to style if you must--but as you do so, remember you are increasing interest in the thread, so thanks for that.  The content is solid and is necessary.

Just a little note from a ragamuffin.

Thank you for that explanation.  It is the best answer i have gotten to a question i posted a few weeks back that started a war.

I think everyone considering WLS should have all the facts on all the surgeries available, so they can pick which one is best for them.

I had no idea the DS was being pushed down so much.  And since it is a viable option that from the posts here has been the tool for so many.  Pre-ops do need accurate information about it.

Thanks for your post.

Since it was a conference of bariatric PHYSICIANS and not surgeons, I'm sure it wasn't Sudan, but one of his colleagues.

Bariatric PHYSICIANS for the most part are those who still believe with all their heart, soul and checkbook that we fatties can be fixed by diet and exercise, and frequent appointments with them, from now until forever.  And that if we fail, it is OUR fault.

Everyone SHOULD get accurate info.

And everyone here should be allowed to express themselves the way they do without the approval of the Pro-Pablum Post Police so that everyone gets a chance to find information presented in a way THEY can deal with.

For example, if I know that every post you make--I'm just using you as an example--is going to include a bit of preaching or flag-waving beyond my tolerance level or political/sexist/racist statements that I cannot ignore because they are beyond my ability to NOT react to...then I just don't open those.  If someone is a real asshole or a real dumb **** I usually block them.

Likewise, if someone doesn't want to open a thread and read word like "asshole" or "fuck," then they ought not open my threads or they could just block me.

HOWEVER...there are some who will only open posts by those who are all sunshine and rainbows and some who will only open posts that at least threaten to be bawdy, and they, too, deserve access to information.

I may just go start another thread on this topic.

People can object to style all they want, but IT WORKS. Just because a certain style doesn't appeal to that individual doesn't mean it doesn't work for ANYONE. It gets attention and often sparks interest. There is a whole thread burried on the DS forum somewhere of people who admit they learned about the DS from a "surgery war" thread AND ARE THANKFUL!

When I Was researching a few years ago, I honestly don't recall where I initially came across the DS, but I can guarantee it was right here on OH where I got REAL facts about the DS and not fearmongering about how "extreme" it was and how it would cause me to poop my pants 10 times a day and other such ridiculousness.

I'm now about 2.5 years out from my modified DS (explanation in my profile for anyone who cares), and my diabetes is in such "remission" or whatever you want to call it that I am sitting here eating frozen custard for breakfast. This is NOT something I do every day, of course, but, well, I'm also now nearly 19 weeks pregnant, so it is what it is. The sugar does not make me sick in any way, including that I ate the first half of this cup of custard last night and awoke to a fasting glucose level of a whopping 71 this morning. If I end up with even gestational diabetes, it sure isn't presenting itself yet! And I had full-blown Type 2 prior to my surgery. My DS, modified as it may be, has saved both me and my future children from many risks and health issues and has allowed me to live more "normally" than ever before in my life.

Now, off to make some disgustingly gluttonous unhealthy DS-friendly foods to have on hand for the work week - you know, abominations like low-carb spinach lasagna, oopsie rolls, and maybe a big crock pot of some kind of hearty soup or stew...
