This is overwhelming :)

You're right. I need to a thicker skin. It's very thin today (it's been a rough week) so I'm going to leave off the research for now and go do something physical. We're having our basement gutted, waterproofed and refinished in a couple weeks and I have to empty that and the garage. It's a big job but it'll be good to get rid of a bunch of stuff. Some WLS on the basement and garage, if you will, lol. And it's sort of a metaphor for what I need to do--clear out the preconceived notions and bad habits, and work on refinishing myself so that I can be the person I want to be. The path to getting there isn't clear yet but I'm determined to learn everything I can and make the decision that will be best for me at this time. :)

Traveling for surgery isn't an option financially. The sleeve, which also sounds interesting, isn't covered by my insurance and would require a fight. Which I will do if that is what I decide. I may decide against surgery altogether--I want to be able to eat somewhat normally. Eating tiny portions of healthy foods is fine; having to puree everything I eat is not acceptable. Neither is having chronic slimy poop or issues with stinky gas at inopportune moments. The threat of revision scares the crap out of me. The snippy RNY/DS comments leave a bad taste in my mouth and a sick, negative feeling in my heart. I don't need that either. I may skip WLS altogether and just muddle on as I've been doing. Now that my knees seem to be on the mend (two arthroscopies in the last 3 months...I should come out of this with two equally functioning knees even if they're not 100%) I can get back to walking and biking. I'm in a better place mentally than I've been in years. So maybe it'll be one last gasp at the old fashioned way for me.
I'm sorry that you have been left with "a bad taste in my mouth and a sick, negative feeling in my heart"

On the bright side, your thread has educated countless pre-ops who are still in lurking mode.

I personally would research my choices, realize that everyone is on their own journey, and will have their own challenges, victories, set backs etc on those journeys despite type of surgery chosen.  Their are a lot of supportive people on here that have had an Rainbow of WLS done.

Its not about which surgery is best, but which one is best for you.

I hope you find your answer, and with an open mind chose your tool.  Remember my RNY story wont be yours and someones elses DS story wont be yours either.  Same with Lap-band and all the others.

Weigh all the information, weigh all the facts, decide what is best for you and your health situation.

Please ask any questions you would like to ask,  there are different forums for different surgery types that maybe away of gleaning more information, without so much conflict.

I am sorry the bickering over what type of WLS is best has been so intense here.

This truly has not been my experience with OH,  i have found it to be an amazing resource and support.

Feel free to personal message me if you would like, i can tell you about my experience, reseach, decision path etc.

Good luck to you hun!!!!!!!!

I'm 10 yrs post op with RNY. I love it, would do it again in a heartbeat and recommend it to anybody who asks - if they think it's right for them. You'll have to make up your own mind. I have heard wonderful things about the DS and sleeve patients seem to outnumber anybody else on here lately - lol. I have not had one complication, I eat whatever I want (in moderation), I've puked 3 times in 10 yrs - my own fault each time, I hit goal at about 10 months out and have stayed there consistantly, I love my rny, I'm a normal woman who eats normally, I can, at 53 yrs old, run circles around most people - even those younger than myself and I love life. For me rny was the best choice. I followed my surgeons guidelines, I recovered quickly, I followed is meal plan for foods and portions, I learned a better way to eat, I exercise, drink a lot of water and smile alot!
Research what you need to, make your decision based on what you want and need. For me RNY was the best, permanent choice. I take my vitamins, eat my 3 meals a day and life is good.
