We don't absorb the majority of the fat, so it won't have an effect.

Won against big bad (SoCal) Kaiser for a Duodenal Switch  Haven't heard of DS? Kaiser wants it that way. Come on over & read the truth
Hit goal (Normal BMI) on 2-10-11!    I LOVE my DS!!
My approval process timeline:
02/12/09 - Dr. refused to refer me for WLS
03/03/09 - Vented/whined about it on another board, planned to just wait until next year & switch plans
Let's see what happens!  **updates in blog**

Am curious...You say that butter, cream, and other high fat foods are basically free foods for you, but what about the affect that all the fat can have on your heart, your arteries and etc?
The fats get malabsorbed. Basically this means we poop it out rather than having it clog our arteries:-)

oh wow, I never knew that...thanks for answering my question...

Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only TRUE FRIENDS will leave footprints in your heart...And may that friendship have such a ONENESS that when one weeps the other will taste salt...Friends are like balloons ; once you let them go you can't get them back....So I'm going to tie you to my heart so I never lose you.

What rabbitfoot said.  It does not even make it into our blood stream.  I eat it then I poop it out.  My cholesterol is picture perfect!

How is eating that many calories a day with the DS not going to catch up with you?
I malabsorb the majority of fat calories (~80%) and a significant amount of protein (~40%). Thus I can pretty much eat these macronutrients ad infinitum. As long as I keep my carb intake low, as carbs are still well absorbed, I do not have to worry about calories.

We absorb half of the 3000 calories.  A 1500 calorie diet is pretty good.  And, well she already mentioned the fat.  We do need to keep carbs low like a RNY though.

I hear you.  I must admit, part of me would like to gorge on 3000 calories a day as well. But, I have an example to set to my child, and eating smaller healthy foods to me is a better example so he doesn't end up obese later on in life.  Super size meals are what has caused this health crisis in America.  Kids learn from example.  And frankly, it's nice to have a rest from food. Give me time to set up good habits.

Also, the long term RNYers 10 yrs + I know eat a bit of everything, including steak with no problem.  Two of them take part in full marathon's and are very happy with their surgery.  Still, it's not for everyone if you can't follow the plan.

We don't gorge ourselves. DSers require to eat healthy too, but it's just way different than with a RNY.

It is not necessary to "gorge" when you get to eat--are REQUIRED to eat--full fat real foods.

And, there are those who would say that growing up on sugar substitutes may not proved to be the healthiest way to grow up either.  Hazards abound with those things.  That is one practice that "healthy-eating adults" probably shouldn't set an example with.
