OT: what is the usual procedure if you find a lump in your breast?

I found a lump/bump/cyst on my breast a couple of weeks ago.  I'm going to see my pcp on Thursday.  I'm just wondering what to expect?  Will I be referred out?  To what kind of doctor?  Who actually does a biopsy? That is what I should expect, right?  Can a pcp do that or do they refer you out?

I have been avoiding thinking about it but now that my appointment is getting closer I wish I know what to expect.

Thanks!

A mammogram discovered my breast cancer. Before that I had lots of cysts which made for lumpy breasts that were benign.

I was referred to an oncologist, a surgeon, and a radiologist, all of whom worked at me- first a biopsy, then a lumpectomy, and then radiation therapy. I missed having to do chemotherapy because of a genetic screen that said I had a low chance of recurrence. Now I see each of them every 6 months, and get a mammogram also every six months.

It was my breast cancer that gave me the kick in the rear to get my health in order, hence WLS.

I hope your lump is benign! Breast ca is very treatable these days.

What order were those referrals?  I'm not clear about the order things progressed.

I'm trying not to freak out but I sure would like this thing taken out.

All my referrals happened at once- they got on it pronto. I was busy for awhile... I was appreciative how quickly everything happened.

Most likely your PCP will do a manual exam. Then you will have a mammogram with an ultrasound. Sometimes they can tell if the mass is benign from the views on the mammogram or ultrasound. If it looks suspicious, thy will refer you to a breast surgeon who will perform the biopsy. There are several types of biopsies. The most common is a fine needle aspiration usually ultrasound guided. Then the cells will be examined. If there is any dysplasia or abnormal cells, your next step is surgery to remove the mass. That will also go pathology to be examined. Depending on the pathology report, this will determine what happens next.

Good luck!!

Well that sounds like a long drawn out process which is what I expected but hoped to avoid.  Weeks of waiting for this appointment and the next one.

I wonder how long it takes to get an appointment with a breast surgeon here.  I can't get an appointment with an endocrinologist until next March if you can believe that.

If I had some form of thyroid cancer I'd be SOL wouldn't I?

Thanks for the hugs.  I'm like what is all the hype about early detection if it takes weeks to get a biopsy?  And I bet you dollars to donuts that it will takes weeks.  Oh well. I guess I should learn not to worry about things over which I have no control.

When I had a lump in my breast, my PCP referred me to a surgeon, who scheduled a biopsy.  My PCP seemed pretty concerned and called the surgeon himself to make sure the surgeon would get me in that afternoon.  It was a week to wait for the biopsy though and a couple days before the biopsy was scheduled, I noticed the lump was gone.  I went back to see the surgeon, who said it must have just been a cyst.  It never came back.

They might also want to do a mammogram.

Try not to worry too much yet.  I know lumps are really scary, but often they turn out not to be anything serious.  It's good to always get them checked out right away, though.

When my daughter needed her gallbladder out it happened really fast.  I can only hope that I have such luck.

Currently I am waiting until next MARCH to see an endocrinologist so I am not  expecting anything to happen fast.
