Did you get dry D3 by prescription?  Where did you get it?

Not from a prescription. From Vitalady.  http://www.vitalady.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&k ey=1115X250  But since I had a prescription that stated NO SUBSTITUTIONS my insurance had to cover it.

ETA fix stupid spelling errors.

Wow, it never occurred to me that insurance would cover it in those cir****tances.  Do you think that most insurances would cover it?  I use vitalady D3 too but it never occurred to me I might be able to get my insurance to pay for it.

If you have a cafeteria plan it would be easier to get your vitamin costs covered that way. You would also need a prescription for it but you just buy OTC vitamins and submit your receipts with your prescription.

I'm a preop, but the doc had prescribed me the 50,000 soft gels and told me to go on a regular Vit. D pill when I finished.  So can I just go to the pharmacy and pick up the D3 in the vitamin isle or do you have to ask specifically for it?

You can get D3 in any store that sells vitamins, on the shelf.  Read the label to make sure it's D3, not D2, but most vitamin D supplements sold over the counter actually are D3.  If you want a big dose, though, like you're on now, you won't find it in stores.  You'll have to order online.  Most people I know on big doses order it from vitalady.com but I think there is another brand you might be able to get through Amazon.

I don't know how long you've had it changed, but your new profile pic looks good. Sorry if I didn't notice earlier.

Oh thank you!  It's been changed for a while but I've been  mostly hanging out on the RNY board.

I discovered the importance of vitamin D before my WLS.  About 3 years ago I started getting leg cramps.  For 2 months or so I tried many avenues to fix the problem; I went to my family doctor, drank tonic water, changed my sleeping situation and so on.

Finally I remembered one of my friends had an on-going leg cramp problem.  I asked her if she ever got them to stop.  She said no, but she just had a very thorough physical, and the only thing wrong with her was a low vitamin D.  I asked her if that could cause leg cramps.  She didn't know, but thought it was possible.

I went to the internet, and found that low vitamin D can indeed cause leg cramps.  Interestingly when I tried to look up the symptom of leg cramps, I never saw anything about low vitamin D being the cause, but searching with vitamin D in the phrase yielded this information.

I started immediately on vitamin D3, and within a week started getting relief.  I was so relieved because I was becoming crippled with the leg cramp pain.  My doctor never tested me for vitamin D, and I let him know my found solution when I saw him next.

Way behind in taking Vit B3. My Dr told me to buy vit D 400 u, 8-1200 u needed. He however doesn't understand wls vit. Okay so I knew I needed vit b3 but wasn't sure how much IU's. So i ended up buying D3 1000 IU softgels. I'm guessing this isn't good. Can anyone help me with this. I do not know what my level is right now. Will be getting labs done this month.

Thanks Julie
