Hello ,
Im scheduled to have RNY nov 21st, ive been super exited about my choice but lately ive been looking some post that say the DS is better than the RNY long term.  Has anyone else gone through this?? and how did you make your choice?

PS i have read the information on both, and investigated.

God grant me with the serenity to accept the things i cannot change ;  Courage to change the things that i can ;  and the wisdom to know the difference!!!

Especially being that your bmi is >50, I would highly recommend that you look more into the DS. Best of luck whichever way you go.

I personally had the RNY and have no regrets at this point (although it is still early in the game).

However looking at your BMI I have to admit that if I were you I would really consider DS. I did a ton of research prior to making my decision and came to the best one for ME and my cir****tances.

There are many things to weigh such as any comorbities you may have as well as your starting BMI. If you have GERD for instance, that MAY be a good enough reason for you to go with the RNY due to it's cure rate. However if your comorbidities are not significant enough to sway the decision process with yourself or your doctors, it has been documented quite heavily that the DS typically is the better choice for those with BMI of 50 or higher. And also consider that most insurances will not cover DS unless your beginning BMI is greater than 50, including BCBS one of the biggest...

Good luck with your decision whatever that may end up being. :-)

You may want to ask this question on the DS board to get more responses from DSers:

http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/ds/

I had the DS last December.

Here are the reasons why I picked the DS over the RNY

1) DS has better results for both the amount of excess weight lost, as well as the lowest rate of regain. Medical studies from pubmed confirmed this while dispelling a lot of rumors and misinformation.
2) No dumping with the DS- major "woot!" factor there.
3) I was hard pressed to find someone on these forums who was unhappy with their DS and needed a revision. Meanwhile, the number of people getting revisions from RNY to DS due to regain and reactive hypoglycemia was eye-opening. I've also seen a few RNYers admit tha if they knew more about the DS when they were choosing their surgery they would have gotten the DS instead.
4) I wanted to have the most normal diet possible post op, the RNY would make me feel like I was prepetually on a diet, while the DS is more forgiving and allows for the greatest variety of foods post op during maintenance.
5) DS is better for resolving metabolic complications which cause weight gain- this was causing my weight problems, not overeatting or a poor diet. 98% cure rate for diabetes, and the benefits don't stop there.
6) I didn't consider taking vitamins twice a day to be difficult in terms of "compliance".
7) I didn't consider consuming 100g of protein per day to be difficult in terms of "compliance". Eat a bowl of chili, nibble on some cheese, enjoy a steak- unless you're a vegetarian, it's not that hard.
8) I feel perfectly comfortable being my own health advocate post-op when encountering misguided medical professionals who don't know a thing about the DS
9) I was self pay, I had to get this WLS decision right the first time since money doesn't grow on trees.

Taken from the previous poster..."4) I wanted to have the most normal diet possible post op, the RNY would make me feel like I was prepetually on a diet, while the DS is more forgiving and allows for the greatest variety of foods post op during maintenance."

While I agree on most things stated I really wanted to make a small clarification here... At this point in my post-op experience (limited, I know) I never feel like I am perpetually on a diet because I never feel hungry. lol One of the positives for the RNY for me at least was a likeliness of this effect. For others it may not be a positive but for me it was. Of course this also means I must be a bit more diligent to make sure I get all the food/nutrition I need, but well worth it for ME.

This in no way changes the original opinion I posted to the OP!

But not like it was before.

I am 3 years out from my sleeve and I have normal hunger. Or maybe even slightly less than normal hunger as I am pretty lean when I just eat to my hunger. I'm certainly not a slave to dieting.

Not for everyone and not the same. I'm just over two years out and I DON'T get hungry (unless it's the day before TOM. LOL). I can easily forget to eat. I don't get "hunger pains" however, if I've forgotten to eat for many hours my stomach will cramp up and I'll feel like I'm dying. That however only happens when I wake up say at 4.am. and forget to eat until like 3 p.m. (and yes, it's happened). I don't get the "i'm hungry" warning, it goes from nothing to can't stand up strait because my stomach is cramping so bad.

I agree with the others, NOT for everyone.  I have to make myself eat most days as I'm not hungry.  The only signal I get if I wait hours to eat is a slight burning feeling in my pouch and it reminds that I haven't eaten.  I'm 6 1/2 years out I suspect at this point this is the new me and hunger or lack of hunger most days.
