Salad?

Is it ok to eat salad with protein on it (like turkey, chicken or ham) for 2 meals? I have started sipping protein drinks during the day and I am hoping to get enough protein from 2 shakes (throughout the day) and my 2 salads. My NUT said for someone my size 40 grams will be ok. I think I am managing about 40 with my 2 shakes so I will have more with my salads. I also drink water (because I have given up soda {AGAIN}). I am really trying to eat more closely to my new living style than what got me to be SMO. So any suggestions will really be helpful! Thanks in advance!

40 grams of protein sounds on the very low end of daily protein requirements- my nutritionist has me doing 100 gms/day.

I do 2 protein shakes a day with skim milk, greek yogurt, low fat cottage cheese, lots of meat and poultry, often in salads, cheese sticks, fish, shrimp. I also have discovered Power Pak Protein Pudding- it comes ready-made in cans, and has 30 gms of protein with 190 calories, goes down easily, and fills me up.

I drink lots of Sobe Water and Vitamin Water.

You can do it! Takes work, but it is so worth it!

It is pretty expensive, but worth it for me, especially when I need something portable. I don't eat it on a daily basis. I get it at Vitamin Shoppe online, but it is also available at GNC.

I was told no raw veggies for atleast 6 mths.  I want salad so bad, it would be so much easier to go out an eat if I could have salad but I am only a little over 1 mth out.

Wow...that seems like a long time before any raw veggies...  *shrug* I know my mom and SIL who both had the RNY were eating salads a lot sooner than that.  Of course, my mom was also told to remain on clear liquids for ONE MONTH post op.  It was a ridiculous requirement, and after time figured out her surgeon was...shall we say, "less-than-stellar?"  My SIL, though had an excellent surgeon, and she wasn't required to go THAT long w/o a salad.  Hmmmm...

I find my doctor takes everything to the extreme precaution.  Like I cant swallow pills for 6mths and some people on here where able to swallow them right away or just a mth out.  Also I had to do a 2 week preop only liquid diet when others had it a lot easier.  I guess he has his reasos but sometimes they suck

My suggestion is to fire your NUT. There is no way that 40 g of protein is enough. Non-altered women are advised to get 55-65 g of protein a day and they are absorbing everything. You have malabsorption, are on a low-cal diet, just had surgery, and are losing weight rapidly. All of those things increase our protein requirements over what is average.

Typical recommendations for protein are 70-90 g a day while losing and many people recommend going higher especially if you've had RnY or a DS and are malabsorbing calories.

Nutritional experts recommend that someone sedentary (i.e., doesn't exercise or have a labor-intensive job) get about half a gram per pound of body weight a day. That means you'd have to weigh 80 pounds for 40 g to be enough. Even if you use the more conservative .37 per pound of body weight, 40 g would only support a 108 pound person.

And, again, this is for people without WLS who absorb all their calories.

Nothing wrong with salads as long as you can tolerate the raw veggies and you choose your toppings and dressings wisely (no super sugary dressings, not lots of carby toppings like croutons, tortilla strips, lots of dried fruit, etc.).

I do agree that 40g protein sounds awfully low. Do you mean you get 40g from the shakes alone PLUS what you get from food? That sounds a bit more reasonable. I don't think I've ever seen anyone with WLS recommended to take in fewer than 60g protein daily, and many of us aim for 100+ (even some without malabsorption aim for that as well).
