Agree! LOTS of sodium in Chinese food. Fast food, too.

Watch your sodium/salt a week before weigh in.

I had approx. 6 months of preop time to lose weight.  I was asked to lose about 12 pounds.  At the 3 month check-up with the nutritionist I still hadn't lost a pound, I actually gained a bit since it was over the holidays.  She prescribed phentermine which I only took for 1 month and it was the only reason I was able to lose any weight at all preop.

However, I think your surgeon telling you that you need to lose 100 pounds or more to be considered for surgery is ridiculous.  He has both unrealistic expectations and probably lacks the skills/experience to perform surgery on people with very high BMIs.

Like other have said, please consider the DS and find a new surgeon.

Good Luck.

First I would like to thank you for the good luck wishes. There are others I have spoken to at meetings and online who have been given high pre-op surgery weight loss numbers. Most of which have different surgeons. I dont believe my surgeon"s skill level should be questioned here. I had another surgeon b4 I changed to a closer location who also set similar numbers. I refuse to run around from dr to dr until I find one that is willing to say I WILL DO IT  or I WILL TRY. I really dont want to end up being a horror story statistic.

If you don't want to become a "horror story statistic" make sure your surgeon is on the vetted list at DSFacts.com.

If he's not there, RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!

I really admire your honesty and how you are approaching the challenge the surgeon gave you.    I know when my surgeon gave me a weight loss goal - with kind of a 'just do it' attitude - I was very grumpy pants.   I mean if I could lose weight easily - I wouldn't need surgery.    But like you - I try very hard to be compliant with my health care provider's instructions.

A couple of things that might help you....
- Track what you are eating (be obsessive about it).   I've noticed when i do that - I can't really lie to myself about what I've been putting in my mouth.   (Plus it counter balances the boredom a little - who doesn't like to check things off).
-  Make it a goal to move a little more.   Even if it's just a few extra steps.     There are exercise resources for the obese.    I found a DVD that was very helpful pre-surgery.
-  Start digging further into the emotional aspects.    What is causing the will power to buckle.   What messages are going through your head that make you choose the immediate gratification instead of your long term goal?    Dr. Judith Beck has a great book - "The Beck Diet Solution"  - that does a nice job of focusing on the mental messages ... changing the self-talk.    I bought the workbook, and the audio book.

-  Make lists of all of the reasons you want to lose weight - read them every day.

Like many of the other posters - I don't think we fail until we quit trying.   You are just struggling - and we've all struggled.    We all bring slightly different issues to the table -  which is why no one solution works for everyone.

Best wishes -   Jody
