Thing is, back then I think he was known as both DS and VSG surgeon. Now he's got a bit of a reputation for pushing the sleeve. Strange (to me) that he would now think it's okay.
I mentioned Rabkin because he's in the same geographical area as Cirangle...maybe not a good choice. But...his DS's all have sleeves...so he COULD tell you.
I'm not recommending any particular surgery at this point as I'm still considering taking my first college level science class.
You definitely need a second opinion. Having kidney stones removed via open surgery is definitely a last resort. I have done research since my post to you and large stones can be broken up via laser - they dont need to be removed via open surgery. I had a medium sized stone - 1 cm and but it lodged in the ureter, blocking it causing my kidney to become enlarged and it became emergency surgery. I had it done via the scope and the laser to blast the stone. This is the newest and from what my urologist told me, the safest way to do it. They only open you up when they absolutely have to. I would definitely find another urologist - the point of using the laser is to break up larger stones into small, tiny pieces that you can pass. Please get a second opinion. Just the fact that you are being told that you need to wait until you have weight loss surgery first with a stone that size is rediculous. Pieces can break off and lodge in the ureters. It can also cause severe kidney damage and left long enough, the damage can't always be reversed.
As far as the weight loss surgery - please like I told you in my other post - dont' get the band or sleeve -they both have high incidense of post op reflux which you don't need with barretts. RNY is really the only surgery that have a high incidence of being reflux free post op. Many DS patients are reflux free but with your malabsorbtion problems now, I wouldnt' recommend it - it would only make things worse. They have severe problems with iron and many have problems with magnesium plus many other things. With RNY, you will need to be careful with your calcium, vitamin D, iron (you will need to continue your iron infusions) and I can recommend some good iron which due to your barrettes is why you weren't absorbing the normal iron - you were taking high dose PPI's which block the acid and you need acid in your stomach to absorb most irons. Carbonyl iron which most of us take post op - you can absorb without acid, it comes with vitamin C in it to help you absorb it. We get it from a website called vitalady.com - she is a WLS patient that opened her own company selling vitamins. She is also very knowledgeable and helps many of us with vitamin and supplement questions. The iron is called Tender iron - they come in 60mg capsule and people take anywhere from 3-5 at a time to achieve good results. This can't be taken within 2-4 hours of your calcium or thyroid medication. Another iron option is called heme iron - called Proferrin - it is much more expensive but those that dont do well with the tender irons, this is stronger. These you can get at the same place and you take 2-3 at a time, broken in half. These can be taken with calcium and you don't need any vitamin C with them.
You will also need to watch out for your vitamin A, b1, b12, b6, selenium, zinc and copper. We get labs done regularly - you might need to get them more often than most - probably every 3 months - atleast.

rbb825,
Thank you so much for your advice and research. I REALLY appreciate you taking the time to not only reply, but research my options both in WLS and kidney surgery. I will take the excellent info you and Sue provided me and approach my primary doc tomorrow and request a second opinion.
People like you are what makes this forum such an amazing resource for others.
