A Crossroads:The Sleeve or Roux and Y???
You are right, of course I haven't lived with a DS. The two scenarios I was referring to were pooping when doing lots of eating, say 3000 calories (ie, way more than I need) vs a 1500 calorie diet poop (pretty much what i need, and a bigger portion of the food is absorbed).
This thread is a good example of the poop issues I don't want to have (and yes, I understand that most DS people don't seem to mind them):

I generally poop once a day... and frankly the volume doesn't seem like more than it was pre-op. Now granted, I'm still pretty early out and my belly isn't able to take in 3000 calories per day so maybe high volume poop is something I have to look forward to later on down the road. So be it.
That said, in two or three years I'll let you know how my poop is and you can let me know if you're struggling to maintain your weight loss (if you haven't completely put it all back on by then.) They do surgery on our stomach, not our minds. I had a problem with eating too many high calorie fatty foods before surgery. It's how I got fat. Enjoy your celery sticks; I'll enjoy my buffalo wings.
(I'd rather eat wings and cheeseburgers and have a larger volume of poop than be relegated to low fat, low calorie just in order to poop less. Your rationale is ridiculous to me.)

Listen,
You have every right to discuss why you chose the VSG over the DS but you are propogating downright lies about the DS and it is ******g me off.
1. We do not have to eat a high fat high calorie diet. That is bull **** You have to eat a high PROTEIN diet and some people need to eat moderate fat to not be constipated. If you MALABSORB the fat then you ARE fit and HEALTHY. My cholesterol is STELLAR. I am fit and healthy. The DS does not make you UNhealthy.
2. Most DSers poop once or twice a day. How often is NORMAL pooping to you? Constant pooping or chronic diarrhea is a LIE.
3. Yes we do have to supplement our vitamins. We CHOSE to do that so that we can be assured of a long term weight loss which you cannot be assured of with the VSG. If dieting (restricing calories) worked then none of us would need surgery now would we? Come meet the VSGers who are revising to the DS. Then find me some DSers who want to revise to just the VSG.
So if you want to DISS the DS at least get your facts straight. It really isn't fair for you to be spouting off about which you know NOTHING for the readers who may believe that you know what you are talking about.

Well unfortunately there are many people online propagating the same lies I am, I guess.
I talked about how I would feel about having malabsorption, not how the DS would make my labs/physical state. There is a difference. And again, I talked about my own feelings about needing to do so much supplementation. And I acknowledged that others feel differently. You are so ticked about me talking about my feeling because??? Because they are different than yours?
I never challenged the long term stats of DS. I know they are very good.
As far as the poop (and gas) issue goes... One thing I that I really wonder, if you don't absorb a good chunk of what you eat, where does that food go? If your body isn't using it, then it has to come out, right?
I know there is a big difference in pooping for me, when I eat say 3000 calories/day, vs when I eat 1800 calories/day. Or 2000 calories vs 1000 calories. And then add in that there is also malabsorption, especially of fat, going on. I dunno, it just seems like you would physically have to be making lots more poop than you would otherwise? Or does something happen to the waste that I am uninformed about?

Sunnymicki, you're just trying to make sense of things, am I right? Maybe I can help.
Before I had my RNY, I had daily BMs and the volume of what I produced had a lot to do with WHAT I ate rather than HOW MUCH I ate.
I once spent six months on the Atkins diet, at induction level. I found during that time that, though I was eating what I thought was a lot, I produced smaller BMs than what I did before going on this diet. The reason? It was all the protein I was eating. My body was using the protein so there wasn't much left for my body to excrete. If I slipt up and ate what I shouldn't have, I produced bigger poops. But as long as I focused on protein, even if I ate a ton, I still had small bowel movements.
So, from what I've learned, if a DSers focuses on eating mostly protein, fat won't be a problem, by default. They really won't be consuming all that much fat. And, since the body uses the protein, there won't be a whole lot that needs to be excreted. And, as a result, normal BMs.
But I haven't had first hand experience with the DS so feel free to correct me if I got something wrong.
I hope this helps,
Lynda

OMFG - you are pitiably misinformed, but that doesn't stop you from spewing your misinformation, does it?
"My surgeon's average excess weight loss results between the RNY and DS are about 7% of excess weight." WTF are you talking about? Did you mean the difference betwee RNY and VSG? Because otherwise, this makes no sense. Not only are the numbers wrong, but it would be irrelevant to your situation. And over what TIME PERIOD are you talking about? YOUR RESULTS AT TWO YEARS OUT ARE MEANINGLESS - WHAT MATTERS IS THE RESULTS AT 5, 10 OR 15 YEARS OUT! But then you don't even know HOW to talk about this, do you?
"With the DS, it seems that for maintenance, you must eat a great number of calories in order to get the nutrition you need. And alot of fatty food too I think? Frankly, I don't want to be eating that much anymore. When I'm emotionally eating, I feel like that is all I do. And I don't want to feel like that ever again - hence the reason for the surgery. Its not natural to eat lots of high calorie, high fat foods, and stay fit and healthy, and I just can't see that being a solution I'd feel good about."
Uh huh. You don't want to be able to enjoy delicious high protein, high fat food? Are you ******g kidding me? You will feel better about yourself on a low fat, low calorie diet for the rest of your life? Then why not just do that NOW? "It's not natural .." Are you ******g kidding me? There are plenty of people with metabolisms that allow them to eat like that and remain healthy, and the DS allows US to eat that way - and we remain fit and healthy, because our metabolisms have been changed. Jeez, do you learn your "science" in some fundamentalist church or something??
You are not being helpful - you are a menace.

You are right, I meant VSG not DS in that point about excess weight loss. Typing too fast. I went back and edited it.
As for the rest of what you are saying...I honestly have no need to further explain my feelings or thought processes. I offered my thoughts to the OP, and I really have nothing to gain by getting into a big debate about whether my own feelings/attitudes/desires are correct by your standards or not.
I do really wonder why it makes you so violently angry and aggressive though? Is it that unacceptable to you that other people have different feelings than you? You are flinging insults and I think if you were saying these words instead of typing, you'd probably be screaming. Holy cow.

Because what you said wasn't as much about feelings as it was MISTAKES OF FACT. For example, you said it wasn't "natural" to eat so many calories - that's factually ridiculous.
Be gone with you - you go get your VSG, because you don't have the sense to have a DS anyway. We'll see you back on the DS forum in a few years - you actually think the VSG is going to cure your emotional eating problems. Uh huh.
