DESPERATE-Can't keep my eyes open.....What could this be?

I hate to admit it but I think you are right re changing my diet to eliminate the carbs.  I have never counted them (only protein), but in attempting to keep up with it yesterday, I am truly BUSTED!

My am greek yogurt is over 20 grams of carbs (i mix plain with one of the flavors 50/50.

Do I need an Rx to purchase a glucometer?  If so I can probably get an Rx today.  If not, then not a problem.

In addressing this issue I looked at my lab results for February and May 2011.  Glucose was out of range both times.     It was 63 in February and 64 in May.  Both were taken in the p.m., after I had eaten lunch.

LOL>.. Yea been there.  Some days I still go a bit crazy and pay for that.

As for glucometers - you do not need RX - but it may be cheaper if you have Rx.  Also the strips. Usually the meter is cheap - where they get you is the strips... Initially I tested my blood often - to find out what and how my body is reacting to foods. But eventually - I do not have to do that. Maybe once in a while.  When i am not sure what is going on.  (maybe once every 2 weeks? )

But some carbs are worse than others.  You may get some acrbs one day - be fine - but eating them on another day - or at a different time of the day - may make a difference.

It took me a year to know what and how things affect my blood sugar.  Now - if my sugar drops - I know what and why... but it is a challenge at the beginning.
BTW: once I have a really low BS (30's or below) my body may be very sensitive for a few days and foods that are mostly OK - may affect me.  I found that out over time.

i.e. Most of the time I can have a cup of berries and be just fine, but if I had a very bad RH - then that cup of  berries on the next day, or a day after that - may cause another RH.  Even if I had that with proteins and or fats. Just proteins - (i.e whey protein shake) may case RH. But if I add some fat to it - I will be fine.  and so on...

Those spot check levels are not bad. What would be interesting would be for you to do a self made carb challenge: Test fasting level, eat something carby, and then check every 30 minutes for 2-3 hours and see what happens.

In last post I should not have said I might need to eliminate the carbs.  The word I should have used was LIMIT since elimination is impossible.

Thanks again.

Hello Pat.

Thanks for chiming in.  What is the purpose of Provgil, to keep you awake?

Provigil is a stimulant that is helpful for some people with sleep-wake disorders. My husband benefits greatly from it.

It may be reactive hypoglycemia.  You can google it to see if the symptoms match yours.

HTH, and good luck,

Fred

If it feels good, do it!  And if it smells good, eat it!

Fred,

Interesting thought.  I have read about it here on OH but never thought about that.  Will read up on it now.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Carbs - or generally too much food - makes me very sleepy in the afternoons.
You thyroids can be also an issue.  I hope they would do the whole panel - and not just TSH.

BTW: even though artificial sweeteners or Sugar alcohols  are not suppose to affect the blood sugar issue - they do for me.  So I had to give up most of it. Also - the artificial flavors and colors... - you liver is working very hard - you may try to clean up your diet. form all the artificial stuff.  Do that for a at least a week or 2..(very strict). Then you may see a difference.

When they creep in my food and my life - it take 2 weeks for me to feel better once i clean my diet.
BTW: a lot of chewable vitamins have artificial sweeteners, flavors and SA.
