9 Signs You Should Fire Your Doctor

Staying with a doctor you're not happy with is as harmful as staying in a relationship you know is bad because it's easier than making a change. But parting ways may be the healthiest move. Here are nine signs that it's time to fire your doctor:

I've been thinking about changing my PCP.   I've only been to see her a few times, but I feel like she's uncomfortable with me

The part about the office staff being your link is so true. And I've been known to find a new doctor when routinely kept waiting.

Great article!  I've fired more than a few doctors over the years.

I used to think I was just a difficult patient because of my healthcare background, until I realized being proactive in my healthcare really made me feel a lot better.  If a doctor didn't believe me about my health complaints, I kept looking until I found one that did.  I have auto-immune issues (lupus & hashimotos).  It took over 7 years to get a proper diagnosis for the lupus.  My reasons for changing docs go on and on.  I refuse to have a doc heavily medicate me, when I've found I have better results through supplementation.  For example I refuse to take high doses of steroids for months on end...not unless I want to become "SHE HULK"    LOL

I've also changed docs because of issues with the office staff.  If the office staff gave me the run around, lost my records/results, or took forever to reply back...the doc would get booted too.  Of course I am always sure to call and give the office manager an ear full when I do decide to leave.     I will forgive a few times of negligence...but more than that is just plain irresponsible.

Since last year I have a new PCP (one that agreed with my choice for WLS), a new GYN (one that will let me wait on a total hysterectomy), I switched WLS surgeons (one that has great office staff).  I also sought out second opinions on some health issues.

Winning isn't everything, but wanting to win is.

We ALL need to be proactive about our healthcare.

If you don't look out for yourself, who will?

Number 9 resonates with me unfortunately. My bariatric surgeon and I are butting heads in a big way and I am at a total loss. I was losing weight ahead of speed for the first six months and them bam, nothing. I went straight to him asking for help and he said I have to be eating too much and not exercising enough so I made adjustments, no change in weight loss. I returned 3 months later up a few pounds and he said I could not have made the changes, I have to be off plan. No, I said, something is wrong. I think I have a metabolic problem. No he says, you aren't on program. Off I go, tail between my legs, eating about 800 calories a day, working out 5 - 6 hours a week. 3 months later I go back, no change in weight. Now, it is simple math he says, you have to eat less and work out more. By this point I am devastated. Physically I felt terrible. Text book symptoms of hypothyroid and have had a horrid headache for 7 months. Went to my PCP who has known me for 20+ years and YAY!!! She believes me!! She ordered blood work and found the TSH was off but T3 and T4 are normal. TSH would normally indicate hyperthyroid but with the normal t3 and t4 it could be secondary hypothryroid so she has referred me to an endocrinologist and I go next Friday. I am supposed to go back to the bariatric doc in a few weeks but I think I am going to cancel, I just don't want to be basically called a liar to my face again. Makes me feel like over eating and quit working out and that is no good.
So I guess I have to decide what to do, go without a bariatric surgeon or switch to another. Guess I'll wait for the dust to settle, but I do plan to send him the results when I get them. I had even asked him to test me and prove me wrong and he wouldn't even listen to me, wouldn't read my food log, you could tell he felt it was a work of fiction. So discouraging, lying is one behavior I detest most of all in humans.

I wouldn't send the test results.  I'd set up an appointment and make him squirm when he had to look me in the face.

But then again, I'm evil like that..

Great article.

I've been putting off firing my doctor, that I love, because of her ineffective, sometimes incompetent staff (mainly one person, but she is the one that all prescriptions and referrals go through). Now I'm gonna just do it.
