This IS true, but not for the reason many people seem to think. It doesn't keep you full longer because the liquid 'dilutes' your food, or washes it through your stomach faster (as would be the case with the RNY), but because the liquid takes up space in your sleeve that you would otherwise be filling up with FOOD.
Keshishian said my stomach was made 6-8 oz, but it feels more like 10-12. When I don't drink before and throughout my meals, I tend to eat much more. I need the fluids to make me full.

"Drinking won't "wash" your food through quicker with your pylorous intact."

I don't think that true... I found pre-op that drinking with my meals would let me eat more. I wasn't washing things through like you can with a stoma, but the food gets mushier faster so the pylorus valve opens up sooner, just like yogurt goes through us faster than chicken.

In fact, my son -- who is underweight - always gives his dad a hard time about drinking water with a meal. He tells him the only reason to do that is to fit more food in.

For me, I am not as religious about not drinking 45-60 min. after eating any more because I don't seem to need to be, especially this time of year when I'm doing hard training and struggling to eat enough. But I do find that drinking with my meals is problematic and drinking immediately after my meals is too. It actually HURTS to do this if I'm not careful. I'm almost 3 years out so it's not a newbie-only thing.

It appears med lit supports that liquids with solids speed gastric emptying by about 20%.. in a normal stomach. As I posted over in the VSG forum, there are some studies that show some people have faster gastric emptying with the VSG, so this would only increase the speed IMO.

o       Clear fluids are empty rapidly (T1/2 » 30 minutes). Solids stay in stomach longer (T1/2  » 1-2 hours)

o       Pylorus is open enough for H2O/fluids to empty with ease. Constriction of the pyloric sphincter to solids until chyme is broken down into small particles and mixed  to almost fluid consistency

If at any point one experiences raid emptying, one should probably eliminate drinking during meals.  My pylorus allows fluids to pass while keeping solids long enough to turn into chyme.

but then again, I have a 5oz+ stomach.  I have more room for both solids and liquids.

I don't drink with meals. I chalk it up to living with the RNY & barfing all those years.  I have to force myself to drink at all.
